Just as with every home, business or municipality we are at the beginning of a lighting revolution due to the invention and expansion of Solid State (SSL) or Light Emitting Diode (LED) Lights. SSL's were first discovered in 1907 by, H. J. Round, but it wasn't until 1962 when Nick Holonyak created the first visible and practical Solid State lights to be use in the headlights and dashboards of GE cars. SSL's have continued to develop and as recently as 2008 have been proven to be able to give the same lumen output as it's traditional predecessor's, due to the ability of clustering the lamps together..

SSL's are highly energy efficient, contain no mercury, lead or other environmentally harmful chemicals, operate with low wattages, available in a wide spectrum of colors, ability to be dimmed, almost maintenance free, long lasting bulb life, and virtually heatless making them perfect to use in an aquatic application. Take for example a traditional incandescent lamp that losses up to 90% of the energy it take to run due to heat that emits from the bulb whereas with SSL's there is virtually no heat loss as well as operating with a lower wattage.

The SSL bulbs can come in a variety of colors including shades of red, blue or green, are low voltage and use less wattage than traditional lights. Please do make sure not to use copper submersible fixtures if you have fish that live in the place that you are wanting to light as the chemical reaction of copper in water can be toxic to fish. Making them a safe and energy efficient addition to your residences' pond or the water feature that you have incorporated into your home's landscape.

There are three components of design to take into consideration when you are looking to include LED Underwater lighting into your homes landscape. First of all is depth, it is suggested that submersible fixtures be placed no more than 4 feet from the surface, due to distortion of the beam spread. Secondly, is the clarity of the water, if the water tends to not be very clear than use a higher wattage fixture. Lastly, is movement. If there is a lot of movement then this will disrupt and possibly increase the beam spread as the top of the water acts like a lens. If the area contains a fountain then place the LED Underwater Lights as close as possible to the spouting water this will enable the water to be lit all the while being concealed. No matter if you are trying to enhance your fountain or pond, LED Underwater Lighting adds another dimension to your existing landscape scheme in an environmentally friendly and cost effective manner.
