Grissom Air Reserve Military Security Lighting System

GSA Vendor RLLD Commercial Lighting recently had the honor of patterning with Innovative Technical Solutions Incorporated.  ITSI is one of the most trusted contractors on retainer by the US Military.  This particular project involved an ITSI contract for a military security lighting system at Grissom Air Reserve Base in Grissom, Indiana.

ITSI was chosen by the Air Reserve because of its impeccable history of strategic infrastructure growth implementation.  RLLD Commercial Lighting was chosen partly because of our access to all types of premium light fixtures that are made in the USA.  We were also chosen to be a strategic partner on the basis of our history in devising innovative lighting design applications for these products to accommodate special requirements in challenging +environments.

Since our technical expertise in military security lighting would be working hand in hand with their expertise in renovation and retrofits, this also enabled us to assist ITSI in developing their bid proposal to the US Government.

Our portion of the bid consisted of 20 pages of a 400 page proposal.  In those 20 pages, we broke our equipment costs down at a line item level in a manner that exceeded the expectations of all parties concerned.

This new military security lighting system would be installed in the portion of the airfield where planes are parked after landing and deiced.  The existing equipment was old and outdated, and its luminance was inadequate.  The military had already published new specifications indicated new, desired levels of lighting. 

For the jet parking area, luminance was desired at a minimum of one foot candle.  In the critical deicing area, luminance would have to be a minimum of 5 foot candles.  This part of the bid was simple enough. 

The challenge lay in the stipulation that ITSI use existing 80 foot light poles that were already in place.  We had to increase the amount of luminance significantly, but we had to avoid overloading the poles with light fixtures.  Wind load requirements in Grissom strictly limited the amount of weight we could place on each pole safely 

Our innovative response to this challenge was to use athletic stadium lights for the new military security lighting system.  While this may seem odd to some at face value, it was actually the best decision to make.  Stadium lights are designed to throw light for incredible distances without light levels diminishing.  For an airfield/parking area that measured 1.8 million square feet total, this was really the only viable equipment choice for the project. 

Each fixture we used featured NEMA 2 optics that generates a tight beam spread that carries for a long and focused distance.  High pressure sodium 1000W lamps were selected as the luminaire sources because they offer an extended life rating of 20,000 hours.  This would save money for the military by minimizing the need for ongoing maintenance in the years to come.

Both the Air Reserve and ITSI were also very grateful to RLLD because of our quick response to a redesign requirement that surfaced mid-project.  ITSI discovered a waterline and had to move one of the existing light poles.  Thanks to our advanced photometric software, we redesigned the military security lighting system without error by project deadline.
