If you have to vary the lighting levels, you can do this by changing lamp wattage without changing out the fixtures.

Establish the Proper Aiming Points
To get a uniform distribution of light from top to bottom, aim fluorescent floodlights two thirds up the vertical surface. For instance, if the wall is 25 feet high, aim your fixtures 17 feet up from the ground.

What to do with limited setback.
Setback is often encountered. Work with what space you have. The minimum acceptable setback distance is one-quarter the height of the wall. If you have more space, install the fixtures at the same distance from the wall as your aiming point is from the ground. For example, going by our example above, that would be 17 feet back from the building.

Regardless of setback, the spacing between should be twice the setback.
To get optimum uniformity of luminance, space fluorescent floodlights at a distance two times the distance of setback. In our current example, fixtures setback 17 feet from the wall must be spaced 34 feet apart. This causes the light beams to overlap one another, resulting in a uniform spread. If a client is more concerned with cost than with uniformity, however, you may purchase fewer commercial lighting fixtures and vary spacing up to five times the setback distance.

Tell your client about the advantages that fluorescent floodlights offer over inground uplights.
There are times when facilities managers request uplights because they are so easy to conceal and do not intrude into the scene. Nevertheless, they are better used as sign lights, monument lights, or decorative landscape lights. When they are mounted close to a large surface like a building wall, they cast a near vertical beam upward. You cannot achieve uniformity with this type of beam spread.

Get a photometric design from RLLD Commercial Lighting.
The example we provided assumes there is a more or less symmetrical building to light and sufficient acreage to give your team the necessary amount of setback. This ideal scenario is not always found in the real world, however. Real world scenarios are much more complex and demanding, and they often call for more architectural lighting design and installation strategies that take too many billable hours to compute.

It is so much better to have our lighting design team calculate setback and spacing for you. This will also help us recommend the best fixtures to use. This saves time and money for both you and your client, and is sometimes the only way to avoid error if you are installing fluorescent floodlights at a multi-building location.

A 3D photometric lighting design will ensure you will create the appropriate foot candle measurements regardless of the symmetry of the individual buildings, their relationship to each another, and the amount of available setback.

This 3D model is also that you can show to our client that will show them the location and beam spreads of the fluorescent lighting fixtures we recommend. The cost of this photometric design will be deducted from your final invoice total if and when you buy the equipment from us.

If you buy your industrial outdoor products from us, we will refund the value of the photometric design by deducting it from your equipment purchase invoice. This will also save you money on service charges.

RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial lighting & commercial parking lot lighting fixtures. Why have I never even heard of wall packs until now?
Fluorescent wall packs are the most common types of exterior wall lights now. People see them so much they basically don’t even notice them. They also don’t draw much attention to themselves because they are so easy to install and require only infrequent replacement in most cases.

Is fluorescent light good enough for this type of lighting?
Yes. Any industrial lighting designer will testify to the fact that fluorescent can output all the light you need for building lighting at even lower energy saving costs than the best metal halides. Not only that, but if there is a power outage in your area, fluorescent wall packs will come right back on without the startup time required by halide outdoor commercial lights.

Will they cost me a lot of money to install?
No, because fluorescent wall pack fixtures are engineered for convenience. Most are single unit builds that only need to be wired to a power source. They cast an even distribution of light around their immediate area which combines the luminance of other wall packs. The fluorescent lamps are very energy efficient and can provide lighting of this type for both safety and security without costing a business an arm and a leg.

Is there a cheap, one-size fits all fluorescent wall pack fixture?
No. Not every single wall pack light is right for your particular building. That is why we recommend that you talk about the much different wattage, intensities, and physical sizes of these lights in order to determine which one will best meet your needs.

Why should I spend money on a lighting designer when the fixtures are already going to cost me money?
Because it will cost you much more if you purchase the wrong fixtures or if you buy too many fixtures. There is never any obligation to buy professional lighting supplies from us. You have the choice to simply buy the design and give it to your local electrical contractor.

Another reason to invest in a photometric plan is to make sure you comply with lighting ordinances in your area. Some of these requirements may look impossible to meet at face value. For example, some cities mandate that fluorescent wall packs around a building be mounted in such a way that their light is never seen above the roof line. This seems impossible to the lay person, but it is not to lighting designers.

All an expert has to do is find fixtures that will point downward and still produce the desired foot candle distribution patter.

How can I get a photometric plan?
Just to call our office and speak to our fluorescent lighting design team. We will normally request schematics, CAD drawings, photographs, measurements, or other documents determined to be relevant to our design process. We will then input this data into advanced photometric software that will allow us to design a 3D model of your proposed lighting system.

Can I get the design for free?
If you buy the equipment from us, you will get your money invested in the plan deducted off the total amount of the final invoice. Costs for photometric "point by point" layouts are reasonable priced and well worth the investment. What other website can provide this type of scientific information prior to investing in commercial lighting equipment? Only RLLD offers photometric lighting designs directly to engineers, builders, developers, owners or other decision makers responsible for spending money wisely.

Related Topics:
Commercial & Industrial Lighting
Commercial Outdoor Lighting
Commercial Security Lighting Fixtures
Area Lighting & Parking Area Lights
Commercial Lighting Design
Commercial Interior Lighting

RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of architectural lighting fixtures. In large airports, runway lighting is controlled by are controlled by the Air Traffic Tower. Lights are low, medium, or high intensity in order to work in both day and night and varying degrees of weather-related visibility.

There are several kinds of runway lights. Every one of them is extremely important to the ultimate success of locating the runway and landing the aircraft safely.

Approach Lights
These runway lights are actually a system of strobe lights and light bars that signal to the pilot where the beginning of the runway is located and where final approach should begin. ALS, or approach lighting systems, are used mostly in airports with instrument approach procedures. They help pilots line up aircraft with the runway.

These lights are vital to the safe landing of planes because distance and perspective are commonly distorted by the angle and speed of the plane. The ALS, using its white bars and flashing strobe lights, creates a field of clearly differentiated signals that work like visual cues for the pilot to use in lining up the plane for landing.

Centerline Lights
Centerline lights are recessed runway lights embedded in the surface of the tarmac itself. They are spaced 50 ft apart and run the entire length of the runway. They are white in color up until the last 3,000 feet, where they begin alternating between white and red. Then, for the last 1,000 ft, they are solid red.

Runway Edge lights
In airports that rely upon instrument approach procedures, the length of the runway is bordered by white elevated lights on both sides, while the last 2,000 feet of the runway is bordered by amber edge lights.

Touchdown Zone Lights
These runway lights show where the wheels of the plane need to touch down.

Runway End Identification Lights
These commercial lights assist the pilot in picking out the runway when it is surrounded by all other sorts of airport lighting and city lights. They also help distinguish the runway from surrounding terrain and increase its visibility in bad weather.

Lights at the end of the runway look red to a departing aircraft and green at the threshold the runway to approaching aircraft.

Taxiway Lights
These runway lights distinguish adjoining taxiways from the runway itself. Light types include taxiway centerline lead-off lights, taxiway centerline lead-on lights, and land and hold short lights.

RLLD Commercial Lighting provides an increasing number of LED and Solar Powered models of these Airport runway lights that are that are self-maintaining, energy efficient, and more reliable than traditional transformer-based lighting fixtures.

Many types of airport lights are becoming increasingly and more readily available in solar powered and LED form. As the pilot nears the airport, many different types of specialty airport lights then guide and direct the landing of the plane. These lights include runway lights, taxiway lights, obstruction lights, and lighted signs.

Most airport lights are intended to shine at different levels of intensity and are available in many different colors. The colors are significant and are very crucial to airport safety and operations. Some colors signify what type of airport a pilot is flying toward. For instance, green and white lights are used at civilian airports, whereas green and white flashing beacons are used for military bases. Yellow lights that then flash light are used to guide seaplanes.

Airport lights are most commonly are used between twilight and dawn. If daytime weather conditions become adverse, however, beacons will also be used to signal pilots that they need to use their instruments for landing and takeoff.

Here are a few of the many airport and aviation lights we offer:

LED Elevated Lights

Point Surface Floodlights & Perimeter Lights

LED Heliport Lights

LED Obstruction Lights

LED Helideck Semiflush

LED Flashing Beacons

LED Rollover Lights

Runway lights are the most important type of airport lights. Blue lights mark the outline of the runway from the air. Green marks the approach end of the runway. Red lights show where the end of the runway is. In most airports, the lights that run along the sides of the end of the runway are white, but they gradually change to amber as you near the departure end. Recessed, or inset lights, are installed down the center line of the runway to show pilots where the middle of the runway is.

Just before you reach the runway, there is an area known as the threshold of approach that marks the location where the pilot must begin the final descent of the plane. Flashing strobe lights are used here to mark this critical junction. Air traffic controllers are in charge of controlling the strobe lights intensity. The highest luminance is set for times where the weather makes visibility very poor. In clear weather, the strobe light is much lower in brightness to avoid distracting the pilot during landing.

Airport signs are also vital to airport operations and safety. There are different types of unlighted and lighted signs. Direction, destination, and boundary signs feature a black legend on a yellow background. Mandatory instruction signs have of a white legend on a red background.

Again, we can see how color coding is used to mark vital areas of transit and boundary. The majority of taxiway and runway location signs, for instance, have yellow legend and a black background that makes them prominently visible. Taxiway ending marker lighted signs are yellow and black as well. One-half distance signs have a black background and a white legend.

Increasing numbers of airport lights are now being manufactured in solar powered and LED form. Talk to an RLLD Commercial Lighting Designer about the availability and workability of solar and LED models for your airport.

RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures. All three arenas require systems to be planned prior to the purchase of any equipment to save on energy costs, contribute to worker efficiency, and to maintain a safe work environment.

Why would an industrial firm need to think about office lighting?
Virtually every facility, no matter how devoted to manufacturing or distribution it may be, has office space of some type. Management and administration requires this separate space to oversee production and to make mission critical decisions about the company.

If we don’t have that many offices, do we need the same type of lighting that non-manufacturing corporations use?
Yes, but you probably don’t need as much because you have less square footage and fewer physical places to light. This can be good news to your pocketbook, and should also motivate you to invest in the photometric plan that will help you save in the long run. In principle, interior lighting design in your office space will follows the same principles as it does in service-oriented companies in the general corporate world at large. Your employees will have comfortable task lighting over their desks and cubes.

How can we save the most money on lighting a few executive and administrative offices?
Let an commercial interior lighting design expert help you determine the areas that really NEED special, high-quality lighting, and which areas really do not.

Foyers should have just enough ambient lighting to look professional to visitors and clients. Meeting rooms and executive office suites ought to have lighting controls that will save electricity by dimming the lights and also be able to create unique emotional states if there is a Power Point presentation or special speaker present.

Break rooms and bathrooms are the places where an architectural lighting designer can show you how to save a lot of money by using less expensive fixtures and using only enough light as is absolutely necessary in non-essential areas.

If we are running a factory, why should we spend extra money on interior lighting design when all we do is manufacture products?
You need it because the success of your manufacturing is contingent on precision, time-to-market, and safe working conditions. The quality of light in the building directly affects all of these things. Without sufficient task lighting, assembly line workers cannot see and consequently work at a noticeably slower pace. Morale tends to be rather negative too when people spend long hours at a time in dark areas.

And just how is interior lighting design so important to safety protocols?
People need certain amounts of light to do certain things. If the things they are doing may hurt them and they cannot see to do them, one major accident can shut your factory down. We are not trying to scare you with information you already know. We have all heard stories about accidents that happened around machines. Go back and look at some of these accidents and you’ll realize that some of them were directly related to poor visibility caused by bad lighting.

Save your company the liabilities and heartache with a photometric plan will show exactly how many fixtures your factory needs, where they ought to be mounted, and how they need to be positioned in order to minimize reflective glare and dispel shadows in hazardous work areas.

What will an industrial interior lighting plan do for my warehouse that general high bay lighting doesn’t already do?
General high bay and low bay lights are standard in almost every warehouse, so by no means do we mean to say here that you should stop using them. However, it may serve your interest better to look at the quality and the age of your current lights. Consider, however, how much you spend on maintaining them and operating them. You may discover that newer, more energy efficient lights engineered with longer lamp life could save money on both power and maintenance cycles.

Is there a way to get new lights and save money on more than just electricity and maintenance?
Yes. In principle, you need more light in areas where forklifts traffic cannot afford to have reflective glare from lights that are too bright or improperly mounted. You need precise levels of task light in packaging areas that cannot afford to be dark because inventory loss is likely to occur in darker areas.

In much of your storage space, break areas, bathrooms, hallways, and less traveled parts of the building, (ie: anything non-essential and non-labor intensive), we may could even reduce your lighting and save you additional money here.

Again, we have to an interior photometric lighting design analysis to see exactly what we can do for you. If you do buy equipment from us after buying the analysis, we refund the cost of the analysis and you end up with better, more efficient equipment and a more productive and safe operation at the end of the day.

What types of savings can RLLD offer its clients?
By investing a reasonable fee in an architectural lighting design plan, you gain significant savings by knowing up front exactly what you need before you mistakenly buy the wrong fixtures or buy too many fixtures. You never need to worry about over lighting an area or under lighting an area. An industrial outdoor lighting design plan is also very flexible—offering you variation in light levels based upon the actual need for light in that area. In certain areas such as warehouse loading docks, you will need brighter lighting for safety. In areas where work is not occurring, you only need general lighting for adequate visibility.

If you buy your industrial outdoor products from us, we will refund the value of the photometric design by deducting it from your equipment purchase invoice. This will also save you money on service charges.

RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures. Your commercial lighting designer takes the raw data that pertains to your facility and industry type and uses advanced software platforms to calculate necessary lighting levels and render three-dimensional models of your proposed lighting system.

This allows you to actually experience what a new industrial lighting system would offer you before actually buying the equipment. You can either purchase the design or have a local contractor source your equipment; or you can buy the equipment from us and pay your contractor for the installation labor.

We reimburse the cost of the photometric layout if you buy your industrial or parking lot lighting fixtures from us.

What experience should you look for in a lighting designer?
Look instead at history for your best frame of reference. Previous projects and case studies on our website will give you a very clear picture of level of precision and skill when it comes to building turnkey commercial lighting systems for our clients.

What training should a lighting design expert bring to the table?
Universities do not offer a degree in lighting design per se, so there are no formal credentials to gauge performance by. However, a good lighting designer should have some type of hands-on or academic training in interior architectural design. Knowledge of building interiors is crucial to knowing how light will disperse within a structure of a given type. They must also be able to produce photometric lighting designs.

It is also necessary that the lighting design specialist be a problem solver by nature. Clients confer with specialists because they have problems that need to be solved. The designer should think in terms of solutions that are generated by in-depth consultation with the client and analysis of facility data.

Software training is the last key component of the industrial lighting designer’s skill set. Design software is very complex and requires a high level of expertise to master.

What tools should that designer use on your behalf?
The skilled lighting designer should be able to take an overhead plan of your building and AutoCAD representation of your current lighting system and generate photometric layouts and models using AGI32 photometric design software.

Do you have some photometric examples where I can view your work?

RLLD Photometric Of A New Harley Davadison Dealership

Photometric Of Dog Training Center

Photometric Shoe Box Lighting Fixtures

Photometric Vertical Burn Lighting Design

Photometric Comparison Renderings SVL VS Shoebox Lighting Fixtures

Photometric Layout Analysis For A Skateboard Park In Guam.

Flagstaff Arizona Volleyball Court Lighting Photometric

What options should you expect in terms of design, equipment, and installation?
You can expect a turnkey design and system solution if you work with RLLD Commercial Lighting as a single source vendor. This planning involves the creation of a lighting fixture, photometric layout that includes fixture placement locations, luminance specifications, and diagrams indicating the presence and nature lighting controls.

Upon request, industrial lighting designs can be rendered into 3D images of the facility that show what the location will look like under new light.

What businesses need a professional industrial lighting design?
As a GSA Advantage lighting vendor, any military or government entity can certainly benefits from one of these plans. Manufacturers that rely upon specified levels of glare free light for safety can also greatly benefit from investing in a design before purchasing. Another industry that seems to come to us quite frequently are those with outdoor parking lot lighting needs.

How can RLLD fulfill this role?
By designing a commercial lighting system first, we can offer you significant savings by showing you exact amounts of light needed by different parts of your facility. There is no point in over lighting a parking lot or anything on your property, nor will you need to worry about doing so ever again, because the design plans out your new system using sophisticated software that does these calculations at the speed of light.

What do you need from us to create an industrial lighting design for our building? Please tell us as much as possible about each type of task that is performed in your building and around your building exterior. This is the most important part of the process—the creation of appropriate, reliable, and affordable task lighting design. Send us elevation plans and a plan view in AutoCAD format.

Using your description of your process flow requirements and the data you send us in file form, we can then calculate your lighting levels and determine your equipment requirements.

What options in design and beyond design do we offer clients?
Every client has the option of simply buying an industrial lighting design from RLLD Commercial Lighting and having their local electrician attempt source the equipment and install it from them. See our photometric lighting examples.

What outdoor lighting products make up these systems?
Industrial outdoor lighting systems are composed of many different types of products. Pole lighting is used for a number of applications, most common of which is parking lot lighting. Pole lights are also used for general area lighting, such as coal lighting, and general outdoor work lighting. You also see pole lights of all sorts used along roadways and driveways that run through large commercial properties. Entrances and exits to properties are also marked by light poles.

Floodlights—some of the brightest industrial outdoor lights—are used to maintain perimeter security. Wall packs light sidewalk areas that run next to building walls. Canopy lights illuminate walkways that connect commercial buildings. Bollards are popular sources of both decorative and functional lighting along trails and near landscape architectural features such as commercial ponds. Such areas also tend to spice things up a bit on the decorative side of things with architectural lights, pond lights, and fountain lights.

Finally, the company brand should always be showcased clearly for all to see. Sign lights and gooseneck lights can be mounted in a variety of configurations to illuminate both monumentation and building facades.

What businesses need them the most?
There are two places that require the very best industrial outdoor lighting systems: the corporate headquarters and any manufacturing facility.

Regardless of the industry type or nature, headquarters must look attractive and establish a clear correspondence between lighting theme and corporate brand. Factories do not need this aesthetic element, but they do require precisely calculated levels of light and the very best in fixture engineering to produce glare-free light.

What are the most important design considerations that require the help of experts like RLLD to consider?
We plan and develop industrial outdoor lighting systems with the most advanced industrial lighting design software available. This software will simulate the behavior of various fixture types and determine which equipment options will work best for your needs. This saves you money by eliminating costly over purchasing and ensures you get exactly the photometric lighting design you need.

How are the various components chosen and configured as a unified system?
We first analyze the size of the facility. Obviously an area such as a mall parking lot will use more light poles than a small convenience store. Secondly, the general lay of the land has to be considered. Some parts of the country are hilly, or even mountainous, and this unevenness of terrain affects light distribution patterns. Finally, the lighting requirements of the type of business are factored into the equation to produce a photometric parking lot design program that satisfies the architectural, spatial, and functional demands of the property.

Operations that require assembly work require task lighting with higher visibility and minimized glare. Emergency lights also need to be installed over doorways in case the power goes out.

In office areas, call centers, and break rooms, HID lights or fluorescent lights represent the majority of the light fixtures used in interior industrial commercial lighting systems. Lighting equipment that is used indoors can only be used within the four walls of the building. This is because they are engineered to function only in humidity free environments. In moist air or heavy rain, they will not last for very long.

Outdoor light fixtures are far more durable. They are wet location rated, which means, in laymen’s terms, that they are designed to weather high humidity, rainfall, and even thunderstorms in places.

The diversity of fixture options available to a business is a clear indicator of how important it is to contract a lighting design specialist to plan and configure your industrial lighting system. Such a specialist will know exactly what type of equipment you need, and where it needs to be mounted.

What businesses require entire lighting systems?
All commercial entities, regardless of whether or not they carry the technical label of “industrial”, need industrial lighting systems. Retailers, office parks, warehouses, and factories all need both interior and exterior light fixtures. Corporate headquarters especially need the very best systems to reflect their brand and corporate culture.

How are these systems designed?
The design of indoor industrial lighting systems is accomplished through a series of specific steps. The first step is to figure out what type of task will be performed in a given area and how much light that particular task will require.

The nature of the task is very important. Office work, for example, requires general fluorescent lighting. Hallways require some light, but only enough for safety—not high visibility. Assembly work and machine work require the brightest light for maximum visibility, safety, and productivity.

Determination of lighting levels is based upon both general and specific factors. General factors are derived from general design guidelines that fall within IES codes. Specific parameters are customized to the environment and task at hand.

Each client is asked to send a plan view and an elevation view of the facility in AutoCAD format so the industrial lighting designer can feed this information into the software platform that in turn generates a photometric layout and 3D rendering of the new system.

How are different types of fixtures chosen and installed together in relationship to one another?
That depends on several factors. The size of the building and the type of industry are factors that weigh heavily on the number and intensity of fixtures. Furthermore, different areas within and around the building will need different levels of light that also have to be factored into the equation. Ceiling height is also a factor in lighting design.

RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures. You must make certain that everything you buy is reliable enough for long-term use in your business environment.

The many different fixture types and lamp options you can get in today’s industrial light products give you the ability to customize your lighting system to the specific applications that run your business. You will get the best results if you confer with an expert who can design a photometric layout of your new system that will act as a guideline for procurement and installation. will ensure the best possible outcome for your operation.

What are some examples of the industrial lighting products you sell?
Large warehouses with high ceilings over twenty feet normally invest in high bay lighting. For buildings with ceilings lower than twenty feet, low bay fixtures work better. Office areas are typically most cost effectively lit with halogen lamps or commercial fluorescent fixtures.

No matter what industrial metal halide high bay lighting products you ultimately decide to purchase, you must make certain that any bay lights or fluorescent fixtures you have installed are easy for maintenance personnel to access if low pressure sodium bulbs or ballasts so need repair or replacement. The quicker the replacement can be made, the lower the labor cost will be.

Keep in mind too that if you invest in lamps that have high-quality energy efficient light bulbs, your maintenance costs will already have been dramatically reduced.

The outside of your building can also benefit from industrial sign lighting products that highlight your company logo and brand. Flood lights controlled by timers or motion sensors can safeguard the perimeter of your property. New parking lot lights poles will increase visibility and safety for employees and guests. For other outdoor lighting needs, a multitude of high intensity discharge lamps, fluorescents, incandescents, and halogens exist as viable lamping options.

What price ranges should I look for?
It is not about money, it is about the integrity of the design and manufacture. When a person invests in commercial-grade products made only in the USA, brightness does not have to cost an arm and a leg. Energy efficient light bulbs & lamps can achieve both the brightness you need and the cost savings that you desire. These commercial lighting fixtures tend to pay for themselves by lowering electrical bills over a period of time.

Are there specific fixture types I should look into?
Newer industrial lighting products are intended to save you money on operations. Some may serve specific applications better than others.

If you need long lamp life and brightness, invest in halogen bulbs. These are incandescent lamps built with a special additive in the bulb that regenerates the filament every time it is lit. Halogens last much longer than traditional incandescents. Unfortunately, halogens create a great deal of heat. If lower your cooling costs is priority, use commercial HID lamps such as high pressure sodium, mercury vapor, or metal halide lights.

RLLD Commercial Lighting supply carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures. These aspects can be summarized in the following four points.

1. Determine exactly how much light you need in a given area.
2. Find the most energy efficient lamps to produce this light.
3. Find the most decorative fixtures to give your building maximum decorative appeal.
4. Determine where these lights need to be mounted.

How does your industrial lighting design process determine how much light we need?
We look at your building, its age, and its usage to calculate the number of foot candles you will need in specific locations using photometric software. These calculations are based upon blueprints and AutoCAD drawings you provide us with, along with answers to specific questions we ask about your operation.

This data, in turn, is fed into an advanced software platform that generates a point by point diagram of lumen output, showing the range and intensity of your new lighting. See our photometric lighting examples.

Can you be sure that the fixtures you provide are indeed the most energy efficient?
Yes. We use only American-made equipment that is made by the top commercial lighting fixture manufacturers in our industry. These fixtures are engineered for maximum lumens-watt efficiency ratios and feature a variety of new technologies that maximize power conservation, lamp life, and optimal beam spread.

The intention here is to get more light with less power, and, when possible, get more light with fewer fixtures.

What is the importance of decoration to industrial lighting design?
That depends entirely on your business type and facility needs. If you are operating a warehouse, you obviously do not need decorative commercial lighting inside. However, it does help to promote your corporate brand to have some aesthetic appeal on your sign or building frontage. Goosenecks are very good for this, as our a number of other architectural lighting fixtures we can provide you with.

If your facility is service-oriented, then your corporate image is vital to your marketing and sales initiatives. Commercial light systems should support your building architecture and provide an attractive face to the world that will enhance your appeal to investors and clients.

You also want your interior lighting to look good to employees who tend to work better when they are surrounding by an aesthetically pleasing environment.

How do you determine where lights need to be mounted?
Industrial parking lot lighting design software calculates the necessary foot candle plots for each specific work environment and outdoor area of your commercial property. It also calculates the optimal lighting angles that will be required to produce these foot candles. Once these angles are determined, we can show your electrical contractor exactly where to mount and position each fixture we sell you.

What if I want to buy my fixtures elsewhere?
You can do that. We will sell you the industrial office lighting design plan and a list of recommended light fixtures. You can then have your local electrical contractor obtain these lights (or their equivalents) through other channels. However, if you buy the equipment from us, we give you the photometric plans for free, and we can ensure that the fixtures you purchase are indeed the best lights for the job.

RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting supplies. Inside this space, your employees need optimal lighting for comfort and productivity.

If you purchase second-rate industrial office lighting fixtures, you could inadvertently create a negative workspace. To get the most out of your equipment, you will need to consult with experts who can a photometric plan that tell you what commercial lighting products will work best for your particular application. This plan will also show exactly how many fixtures you will need and where your electrician will have to install them.

In previous decades, people often got very tired in the workplace because of poor lighting conditions. Eye strain would cause fatigue because of the poor quality of older generation indoor fluorescent lights. These industrial lights had poor power due to older magnetic ballasts.

Also, the bulbs in those lamps contained a mixture of gases and metals that would shine a slightly yellowish glow on the room that would add to the stress of labor and task as employees work in an increasingly uncomfortable work environment.

If your industrial fluorescent lights are more than ten years in age, you may need to install a new industrial office lighting system for the betterment of your employees. Features that you need to look for in these fixtures are easy maintenance access to bulbs and ballasts.

Also, it is wise to spend a little extra money on the more energy efficient lamps. They will help you save money on operating costs by consuming less electricity, and their longer lamp life will mean fewer bulb replacements and correspondingly lower maintenance costs.

Some ceiling-mounted industrial office lighting fixtures still use the traditional tube shaped fluorescent lights. Wall mounted lights render color much better than their predecessors ever did. You no longer have to deal with that yellowish look to skin and clothing. With yellow light no longer present, eyestrain is gone as well. The brighter light these fixtures emit also helps them to work more productively.

If you choose something other than fluorescent lighting fixtures for your industrial commercial office lighting, but you still want the benefits offered by energy efficient of fluorescent bulbs, you can use traditional lights that require screw-in incandescent bulbs retrofitted with fluorescent replacements.

By replacing these incandescents with compact fluorescent light bulbs, you can lower your energy costs, and, depending upon the number of lights you replace, lower room temperatures in your office. This is due to incandescent lighting’s tendency to wastes so much energy in the form of excess heat. This can affect your air conditioner thermostat and cause your building cooling costs to rise.

Energy savings is the most important thing to think about when you are choosing your industrial office lights. You need the help of an industrial GSA lighting expert who can locate brightest of lights for the least amount of energy used. Call RLLD Commercial Lighting to get started with this process today.

RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures. All of our support staff is domestically based, and all of our products are American made. We have access to the very best industrial light equipment. We can configure an entire system with a firm, total cost and handle shipment to your location as well.

When the equipment arrives, we can also partner and consult with your electrical contractor if any assistance is needed with the installation of our equipment.

What steps are involved in configuring an outdoor lighting system?
Outdoor industrial light must generate adequate lighting levels for safety and perimeter security. It must also be of an appropriate color to respect building architecture.

What steps are involved in configuring an indoor lighting system?
To create an appropriate level of indoor industrial light, we have to do several things. First, we have to determine the type of facility we are lighting. If it is a new facility, we need to get an idea of what the tenants will be using the facility for. If they will be incorporating skylights, we have to make adjustments for a certain amount of natural lighting in the building.

If the client is looking for lighting control, we need to know if they have already hired someone to install the commercial lighting controls, and it helps us to know what types of controls they will be using. If the client is looking to buy equipment first and then look to have industrial light controls installed with the new fixtures, we will help them find a contractor who specializes in this service.

If this is an older facility, then the project is technically classified as a retrofit. Our client will need to supply us with information on their current industrial light levels. A basic light meter can do this, and any local lighting or electrical contractor should be able to come out and provide this reading.

What other materials do you need?
Blueprints of the building are always helpful. If any overhead plans or AutoCAD drawings of the original lighting system are available, those should be sent to us as well.

What features should clients be looking for in terms of light output and energy efficiency?
Indoor industrial commercial light should provide your employees with a feeling of safety in all parts of the building. There should be no dark corridors or corners where a person may feel uncomfortable walking—particularly after sunset. In offices and cubicles, lighting should also be optimized for comfort so employees can perform their tasks without annoyance or eye strain.

For energy efficient lighting, always buy American made products and spend a little more on the newest technology. New technology, although sometimes more costly on the front end of a purchase, is designed to reduce a building’s carbon footprint by using less power consistently over a period of time. This reduction in power consumption means savings that go back into your operations budget.

RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures. Some of these tasks require better lighting than others because of the level of detail that is involved. Building robots, for instance, takes far more foot candles you would need for the assembly of auto parts.

Many procedures also require optimal illumination for the sake of safety. Any type of manufacturing operation that requires people to use heavy machinery for metal or plastic casting will need a superior luminance and foot candle spread to see and monitor controls. Lighting here has to be very precise in order to strike a balance between shadow and glare.

Industrial task lights are needed in just about every form of industry. Auto makers, for instance, need them for assembly lines still manned by human employees. Manufacturers of robotics, computer boards, and microchips that go on computer boards need the very best industrial task lighting to create optimal lighting conditions that allow for small parts to be seen and assembled correctly.

Though prevalent in manufacturing and assembly, many shipping and receiving operations also need task lights to better maintain a safe and efficient process flow. Depending on the products being handled, packaging and inventory control may depend very heavily on clear lighting. Many larger warehouses will often invest in commercial light fixtures that will provide more optimal lighting in these parts of the building that is provided by the general warehouse lights themselves.

Task lights look like high bay and low bay, fixtures, but they operate at a higher level of performance. They have higher wattages and produce greater luminance.

Obviously a higher-wattage fixture is going to cost a bit more to run, so many clients often pause at this point to consider whether or not such an investment is truly worth the money. It is when one considers the benefits that a safer, more efficient production line will bring to a company. Improved time to market and reduced safety liability can generate increased profits that can offset operating expenditures.

Running our high bay light fixtures will not increase these expenditures more than 30%, so the improvements in process flow can easily offset the additional electrical operating costs.

There was a time where it was a hard fast rule of lighting that putting a higher wattage lamp in a fixture meant replacing it more often. Higher wattage in those days meant shorter lifespan and added costs for maintenance.

However, this is no longer true thanks to pulse start metal halide technology. Industrial task lighting engineered around this new energy efficient operating design can extend the life of the lamp. Longer warranties on the products also cover replacements in the event of lamp failure.

While fluorescent and LED lamps continue to evolve and develop into new industrial forms, neither can yet rival pulse start metal halide’s capability. For the time being, it is still the best choice for optimal luminance and lighting quality in industrial environments.

RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures. They have always been a mainstay for large operations as both general light sources and industrial task light sources.

Other industrial outdoor commercial lighting fixture types include canopy lights, which are used to light covered walkways; foyer lights, which illuminate the front interior entrances of buildings, and general office lights, which can illuminate anything from offices to hallways to restrooms.

What industrial lighting fixture features are mandatory for lights to be worth your investment?
They must have good reflectors to be worth your investment. To protect against breakage in areas where there is heavy vehicle traffic or lifts in operation, you may need to invest in a wire cage option that keeps glass lenses from breaking.

What are the best qualities to look for in outdoor industrial lighting fixtures?
The most important thing is the fixture reflector. This is because without adequate beam spread, the reach and intensity of luminance will fall short of intended foot candle requirements.

Another must-have quality in today’s super energy-conscious world is fast start pulse capability. This is especially valuable feature of floodlights, and it is also a very vital to getting things back online if there is a temporary power outage.

Also, look for a good lumens per watt energy rating. Ideally you want warehouse luminaires that can produce large amounts of light at comparatively lower levels of power.

Keep in mind too that these last two attributes are often regulated by law, so talk to your commercial lighting designer about which models will work best for you.

What businesses use industrial lighting fixtures?
There are hardly any businesses that do not use some form of industrial lighting fixtures. Some of these are commercial operations, while others include municipal and academic facilities.

The following list includes, but is not limited to, the most common industrial and commercial lighting examples:

· Convenience Stores
· Car Wash Facilities
· Historical Warehouses
· Industrial Retail Stores
· Schools
· Corporate Retail Centers

Please keep in mind too that as a GSA Advantage vendor, RLLD Commercial Lighting can now sell commercial lighting of all kinds to The Federal Government. (GSA Contract: # GS-07F-0060W)

What makes RLLD fixtures more effective in quality?
To begin with, all of our industrial lighting fixtures are American made. This means that they come with better warranties and can provide replacement parts on an individual basis. If a bulb burns out, for example, you only need to get a new bulb, not a whole luminaire.

Our site lights also have the best lumens per watt ratios compared to those manufactured overseas. This makes them much more efficient to operate. Any higher costs up front will eventually be compensated by the power savings of pulse start technology.

What are the maintenance and replacement cycles that contribute to further savings?
One of the best examples of how RLLD can save companies money is the example of high bay relamping. Generally this must be contracted out because lamps have to be replaced at great heights within a high-ceiling environment. This costs an organization a per-hour labor rate, and it often forces them to wait until enough bulbs have failed before they call an electrical contractor.

We can minimize this inconvenient cost by installing high performance bulbs in high bays that will make them last longer and therefore cause such costly relamping to impact your operations budget much less frequently.

How can I contact RLLD about purchasing lighting products under the GSA program?
RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures within the GSA Advantage program. Factories need special types of commercial industrial lighting for illuminating both their exterior grounds, their indoor shipping and receiving bays, production areas. Warehouses need reliable, efficient fixtures that feature an ease of maintenance and long life.

Retail centers and outdoor malls must have the very best parking lot lights, mounts, and poles to maintain customer safety and to remain in compliance with government regulations that regulate foot candle levels and wind resistance. Parking garages have to have specialized outdoor light systems that will evenly illuminate winding aisles of up and down drive ramps without creating glare that will blind the eyes of motorists.

Roadways require street lights that produce similar levels of glare free light so people can safely drive at night. These roadways can be city streets, county highways, or private drives that runs through a office parks, municipal districts, or college campuses.

Commercial industrial lighting fixtures come in all types of intensity levels and configurations. Their designs are based upon where they are used. High bay and low bay lighting is prevalent in factories and warehouses and illuminates manufacturing and storage areas. High bays and low bays have also made considerable inroads into sports lighting with new metal halide technology that makes them ideal for lighting gymnasiums.

Any number of wall mounted fixtures can be used for outdoor building lighting and security lighting. These commercial light fixtures can be as decorative and highly energy efficient as they are practical—provided that are made by American companies that stand behind their work and who offer more than just a few size, trim, and color options so that fixtures can be matched to building architecture and intended use.

Floodlights are crucial to commercial industrial lighting for security. A number of new reflectors and lamps have emerged with the advent of pulse start MH technology. These new lights can be operated by either timers or motion sensors.

Parking lot lights rank among the most important types of outdoor architectural lights. Trusted US Manufacturers create a multitude of intensities and reflector types that can distribute foot candles in many different patterns and levels of intensity appropriate to location and size of the parking lot. Commercial lighting poles, particularly galvanized steel lighting poles, are often critical to the optimal performance of these fixtures and should also be purchased from American manufacturers through a design-vendor firm such as RLLD Commercial Lighting.

In order to be effective, commercial industrial lighting has to be approached from the standpoint of building a system that will address several major concerns at once. First, the system must produce a desired amount of light to evenly illuminate a facility and create working conditions that are optimal for safety and production. Ideally this system should be an energy efficient light and use as little power as possible in the production of this light, so this balance between luminance and power consumed is called the lumens per watt ratio.

The best commercial industrial lighting jobs, then, are naturally those with higher lumens per watt ratio. Such fixtures can be trusted to use only so much power in the performance of their task. They should be manufactured in the United States as well in order to obtain superior warranty and replacement parts in the event of accidental breakage.

RLLD Commercial Lighting offers parking lot lighting, tennis court lighting, energy efficient indoor and outdoor architectural lighting fixtures, photometric lighting design, supplies and sales of sports field, landscape, security, and area parking lot lighting products.

RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures. This historic landmark, built in 1885, had been central to the importance of Lemont, Pennsylvania. This building was a grain elevator and coal shed that had been played a crucial role in the position of Lemont as a regional agricultural hub up until the mid 1950s. After this time, however, the building fell into disuse and disrepair.

Not wanted to see the collapse of a historic building that had once been so important to this community. After the LVA purchased it, along with a surrounding 1 acre parcel, plans were drawn up to renovate the building. The intention was to use the site as a location for numerous local functions. Once the building was restored to its historical condition, the LVA aimed to use it to host a seasonal meetings, special events, feasts, plays, art shows, farmers markets, holiday markets, and weddings.

The most pressing challenge was finding a luminaire that looked historically authentic.
The Lemont Village Association did not want to install any contemporary lighting on the building that would diminish its historical look. At first they thought he would simply find fixtures that had a classic look and offer the high performance output he was seeking. The initial retail channels he investigated, however, provided him with nothing. He also faced the same challenge with interior lighting fixtures, which were equally difficult to find. After searching online, however, they located RLLD Commercial Lighting and liked the look and performance rating of our exterior gooseneck lighting fixtures.

There were no real design concerns other than the need to aesthetically match the historicity of the structure.
Because our exterior gooseneck commercial lighting fixtures looked much like 19th century lights, all the LVA needed to be sure of was that they would produce the desired levels of levels of outdoor lighting. They ordered three fixtures to test lighting output, and, liking what they saw, ordered one more fixture for the building.

In this particular instance, there was no need to use our photometric design software.
There were no municipal lighting codes and no county ordinances to meet, so the LVA literally had free reign to choose their decorative outdoor lights.

The luminaires ultimately purchased by the LVA 150W RLLD exterior goose neck light fixtures.
RLLD exterior gooseneck light fixtures are specification grade quality made specifically for commercial lighting. They feature ¾ inch aluminum brackets and spun, galvanized steel and heavy-duty reflectors. The models chosen by the client featured a high-gloss black, powder coat finish that matched the historical architecture of the building.

Interior light fixtures were also purchased to compliment outdoor architectural lights. These 200W ceiling mounted lights that reflected the same historical look and featured a pendant-style design.

How Do I Contact RLLD?
RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures. In this joint venture, we acted solely as distributors working in partnership with a Houston-based lighting design and Houston electrical contract services company known as Illuminations Lighting Design.

The Hill Country Hyatt, located in San Antonio, TX, had hired Illuminations Lighting to design and install a new indoor commercial lighting system for a rather challenging structure they had constructed on their property.

This structure was a 5,000 square foot semi-permanent climate controlled tent. The tent was constructed because occupancy had exceeded the limits of the current tennis facilities, and a new structure was needed to cover the tennis court slab and handle overflow guests at the hotel. The advantage this new structure offered was that it could also be used for other functions as well, such as golf tournaments, wedding receptions, Movie Theater, business functions, galas, gold tournaments, and many other uses.

The luxury hotel had decided to construct a semi-permanent structure first, measure the success of the activities and revenue generated, and then they would decide whether or not they needed to build a permanent structure in the future.

In order to create space for this tent, the hotel had uninstalled the tennis court lighting poles and nets, and they hired a landscaping company to help blend the structure into its surroundings. As part of the construction project, the tent builder had installed 400-watt high bay lights to illuminate the interior. These commercial lights performed poorly from both a functional and aesthetic standpoint. The space resembled a garage, not a multi-use gathering place.

Illuminations Lighting Design was contracted to develop and install a new tent lighting system. They contacted us for a 3D model of the proposed system they designed, and to order all necessary equipment. We acted promptly on behalf of ILD, publishing a photometric layout, a 3D rendering of the proposal, and explained the features, advantages, and benefits of the new equipment to the hotel owners.

The proposal met the intended budget of $20,000 (installed) and included (10) rustic chandeliers that featured 21 Lamps, a 2 ring design, and 10’ of sturdy chain per chandelier. ILD also installed a Lutron dimming system for setting light levels. Because the tent was built for multiple, separate uses, switch legs and circuits had to be installed to allow for custom switching and dimming. When the client approved the proposal, we then worked closely with Justice Lighting Group to hammer out all the details of the order, including finish, style, proper chain extension, and critical lead time for delivery of equipment to job site to make certain the equipment arrived on time.

As we previously noted, RLLD acted strictly as a distributor on this project. The owner of ILD, impressed with how efficiently we worked with his organization, had this to say about RLLD Commercial Lighting:

“They quickly quoted and shipped the chandeliers from the factory, straight to the jobsite. They arrived on schedule and without any issues. As a specialty lighting and electrical contractor, staying on schedule means the customer is happy and the job is profitable. I will certainly be using RLLD for other residential lighting and commercial lighting projects.”

RLLD Commercial Lighting has a wealth of such resources and product knowledge that can help any client or specialist organization choose the right fixture for the job. They had been seeking online bids for their car dealership lot lighting system with very little success.

CHALLENGES
The challenge for this car dealership lay in the fact that they already had existing concrete light pole bases on the lot that had been spaced too far apart. This made it hard to find fixtures which would adequately light the car lot, and none of the vendors they had contacted before us had any been able to locate an appropriate lighting fixture, reflector, and lens assembly that would the necessary light levels for nighttime business and security.

Another challenge lay in limited lighting pole installation requirements due to wind zone requirements. Additionally, the anchor bolts that were already set in concrete would allow for now more than 25’ poles in a 90MPH wind zone. To balance pole height limitation with a limited range of fixture options, we needed to run through several scenarios in our photometric software to generate a sound proposal for this car dealership.

PHOTOMETRIC DATA REPORT
The owner of the dealership helped a great deal in this process. He sent us diagrams and pictures of his car lot, and he gave us a copy of the previous proposal that had not materialized. We did a quick photometric lighting design analysis and concluded that this client needed more than one option to consider based on to the challenges inherent in lighting this facility. Ultimately, we were able to him two proposals and the benefit of one over the other.

The first was an upgrade of the original car lot lighting system which had used horizontal burning, metal halide shoe-box fixtures. The owner had requested seeing what an upgrade of this nature would look like and cost, so this was the first option we provided.

We also proposed a commercial lighting system that we felt was even better. It used high-performance vertical burn SVL series lighting fixtures. The larger housing, better performing reflectors, and a sag glass lenses, enable these fixtures to consistently and cost-effectively output more light.

We created three dimensional models of both systems so the owner could compare the two.

FINAL SYSTEM PROPOSED BY RLLD
Both models showed the same number of parking lot lighting fixtures in use, but the results were overwhelmingly in favor of the SVL series equipment. With the SVL, luminance was more evenly distributed throughout the merchandise area, but the shoe-box type fixtures produced too many hot spots directly underneath the poles. There was also too little light between the existing pole locations.

The SVL fixtures were clearly the best architectural lighting choice for the car lot considering the location of the existing pole bases. We also installed perimeter fixtures to enhance the visibility of the dealership in the front along the highway, and we installed two additional poles on the inside of the lot that supported four 1000W fixtures, each equipped with specific reflector for interior area lighting.

HOW DO I CONTACT RLLD?
RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures. The club had many members, and boasted was a 4-court sand volleyball commercial facility which was used by local leagues for games and tournaments. Over the years, the lights had deteriorated, and the club management decided it was time to consider replacement options.

CHALLENGES CLIENT WAS FACING
The existing lighting system was woefully inadequate for a multi-directional, fast moving sport such as volleyball. The existing court lighting system consisted of nothing more than a set of wooden poles and quartz halogen lamps. While these courts definitely needed more foot candles in the play areas, there were two things we had to keep in mind while proposing them system. One was dark sky regulations. Arizona has some of the most restrictive lighting ordinances in the nation, so we had to carefully study the lighting code book from the City of Flagstaff to find the most appropriate equipment options.

The second challenge was client budget. Operating costs had risen over the years, while membership had remained static. The client asked us to propose two volleyball court lighting systems at different price points so they could determine which one would work best for them.

LIGHTING DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
The four court layout was also a considerable challenge for our design team. It offered very little room for interior pole placement due to safety concerns. All volleyball court lights would therefore have to be mounted on perimeter poles.

The interior court boundaries would suffer from lower levels than rest of court surface, but foot candles levels would still meet acceptable minimums.

PHOTOMETRIC ANALYSIS SOFTWARE HELPED TO DEVELOP A CUSTOM LIGHTING PLAN BASED ON IESNA STANDARDS.
It was necessary for us to maintain an average of 24 foot candles throughout the entirety of the playing areas. With the eight pole lighting system, we were able to achieve a max to min ratio of 2.3: 1. We were also able to show the client a rendered 3D view of all four volleyball courts to completely illustrate the lighting system and its capabilities.

FINAL SYSTEM PROPOSED
For fixtures, we decided to use our CXL Series court lights as they were full cut off, and specifically designed for all volleyball court sports lighting kit situations. We proposed two different layouts—an 8-pole layout, and a 4-pole layout. We strongly discouraged the client from going with the 4-pole system because the luminance levels were sub-par at best.

Although the cost was higher, the client eventually opted for the 8-pole layout. The simple design of equipment fit with the club aesthetics, wind load capacitance met with regulations, and the CXL series fixtures met with all dark sky ordinances. RLLD further assisted the athletic club by consulting with the local electrical contractor to properly place, orient, and install equipment.

OTHER SPORTS LIGHTING FIXTURE INFORMATION:

Baseball Field Lighting
RLL Design baseball lighting fixtures feature sophisticated optics and advanced reflectors that generate superior lumens per watt output in comparison to competing models.....

Soccer Field Lighting
Soccer field sports lighting fixture design depends a great deal on the height of the poles you choose, which is why RLL Design inventories a wide range of light poles and pole mounting accessories so you can position your athletic field lights at that appropriate levels.....

Tennis Court Lighting
Tennis court lighting kits are designed by RLLD sports lighting experts to produce optimal footcandle levels and excellent color rendering. Our hope is that this in and of itself will equip you to overcome objections you may encounter. If not, we have some additional services we offer to our clients (at no additional charge, mind you), which touch on at the end of this article.

OBJECTIONS CONTRACTORS FREQUENTLY HEAR

Light quality
Some of your clients may still be under the impression commercial grades LEDs are only decorative in nature or useful only as indicator lights in computers and engines. The development of LED white light has changed all this, making it possible for both general purpose lighting and high-end lighting demands to be met by newer, improved, and ultra-sophisticated LED lamps and fixtures.

Thermal management
Many businesses and municipalities also believe that LEDs overheat too quickly and manage thermal demands poorly in comparison to other commercial lighting luminaires. Industrial clients may be especially concerned about this heat issue. Rest assured, and put their minds at ease as well, that this heat issue with LEDs never was what people thought it was to begin with, and is certainly not the case with commercial grade led lights.

Early attempts to fit LED lamps to standard incandescent lighting fixtures resulted in overheating. This was not the fault of the LED, but the result of placing new technology on top of older science incapable of handling it.

Cheap retail LEDs may still consist of such designs, which is why RLLD only sells commercial grade lighting LED fixtures made specifically for operating LED lamps at cool temperatures.

These lights are so effective they burn at lower temperatures to any other lighting source and actually have been known to cool building interiors enough that the HVAC works less and costs less to operate.

LED vs. Fluorescent
You may meet people who are already sold on the idea of the latest and greatest fluorescent lighting because they too manage heat very well and use much less power than incandescent.

LED commercial grade lights produce even less heat, require even less power than fluorescent, and contain no mercury that can damage the environment or cost an arm and a leg in disposal fees (which are increasingly required in many states due environmental waste concerns.)

LEDs are also fully dimmable and give you a broader spectrum of lighting effects if décor matters at all to your client.

Lighting Levels
Many businesses may be afraid that LED commercial solar lights might not shine as brightly as more traditional technologies. This becomes more of a myth every day.

LED Light bars in commercial indoor and outdoor solar site lighting fixtures now are capable of producing levels of light comparable to almost all HID fixtures, and certainly equivalent in output to fluorescent and incandescent sourcing.

Limited Applications
Some think too that commercial LED solar lights are small and can only be used indoors, or for limited decorative landscape lighting outside.

In actuality, commercial LED solar light fixtures now provide illumination from everything from city streets to parking lots and parking garages. Clients that were bold enough to invest in these fixtures have been pleasantly surprised, not only by the power savings they generated, but by the superior directional control commercial LED lights have demonstrated and by their negligible light spillage ratio (compared to 30% for HPS and other MH).

If you are still uncertain if any of these LED solar lighting fixtures can truly meet your client’s needs, call us first before giving up on green technology, and we will be happy to provide you with a photometric analysis and any all the technical information necessary for you to make a quality decision. This photometric assessment will show your client exactly how much light they need in every square inch of their property, what fixtures are needed to produce that light, where these fixtures will be mounted, and how much power it will cost to operate the system. This could very well be your strongest selling point for proposing LED, because it literally answers every question with mathematical and scientific fact combined with a visual that is easy to read and comprehend.

RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures. Because LED solar lighting generate light by passing current through a diode, they do not require incendiary gases to function, and they produce no toxic byproducts during operation. The recent development of LED’s from basic, primary colors into true white light now makes it possible for LED solar lighting to be used for a diversity of commercial and industrial applications, one of which is street and LED solar parking lot lighting. LED energy efficient lighting use only 20% as much electricity as do incandescent-based lights such as Metal Halide and High Pressure sodium fixtures. Consequently, they represent an enormous savings potential for any municipality looking to lower civil electric costs. Furthermore, they represent the wave of a more Earth-conscious future. They produce negligible amounts of heat, and they do not harm the atmosphere. A good number of large corporate establishments also feature internal roadways that require street lighting for visibility and safety. LED solar lighting technology can help these companies save money and improve their public relations as environmentally friendly entities.

Some American and European cities have already experimented with LED Street Lighting and have been exceptionally pleased with the initial results. One city that is currently looking closely at the cost effectiveness of LED solar lighting technology is Ann Arbor, MI. Based upon their initial findings, city leaders estimate that Ann Arbor’s 1.39 million dollar annual electrical costs will ultimately drop by 50%. Word of this has quickly spread to other places, and more municipalities are sure to follow Ann Arbor’s lead as public concern over global warming and oil prices continues to mount. In communities where electricity is produced by fossil fuel, LED solar parking lot lighting creates savings both on power expenditures and also helps to better conserve the fuel used to make the power.

LED street lights out-perform incandescent luminaires in a number of additional ways that bear closer scrutiny. First and foremost, they last longer. On the average, the lifespan of an LED luminaire is around 12 years—approximately 5 times longer than an HPS or MH lamp. This works hand and glove with the procurement cycle of small towns throughout the U.S. who can only upgrade afford to upgrade lighting equipment once every 10 years. The simpler, solid-state design of an LED represents a maintenance free piece of equipment as well. City governments can save on labor costs by letting the lights take care of themselves.

Finally, and most significantly, LED street lights have been found to produce a quality of light that is actually superior to MH and HPS light fixtures. Several causes account for this. Because white LED light is a synthesis of primary colors produced through electron excitation, it is possible to manipulate the output of the lamp at different points between the red and blue ends of the spectrum. This creates an adjustable light that helps drivers more effectively differentiate between colors at vulnerable times like dawn and dusk. It is also easier to aim the directional output of LED street lights. Unlike HPS and MH lamps that lose as much as 30% of their output to spill light, LED’s focus their light in a much more targeted fashion toward a desired area. In cities where glare and light pollution have proven a nuisance to businesses and a hazard for drivers, LED street lights are the ideal upgrade to put the surroundings in a whole new light.

RLLD Commercial offers a rapidly growing supply of LED area lighting fixtures engineered for specific commercial, industrial, high-end, and municipal environments. Once commercial lighting poles become weather beaten, they begin to lose their finish and become an eyesore to the public. This diminishes an organization’s public image, and it works against corporate branding. If light poles in commercial parking lots are faulty, and lighting levels are insufficient or inadequate, this also creates safety hazards and possible legal issues. Lighting regulations require 3-4 foot candles to be evenly distributed throughout every parking lot, regardless of the type of organization it services. Many business owners and facilities managers are unaware of this, and allow commercial light poles that begin to intermittently fail to continue deteriorating until they finally burn out.

If an accident or criminal mischief occurs in such an environment, the organization could very well face a third party lawsuit for negligence. It could also be fined by the government for failure to comply with lighting regulatory codes. While investing in new commercial light poles may represent a price point that many organizations—especially educational, non-profits, and municipalities---initially fear to make in the midst of a recession, the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages when one considers the many financial pitfalls that procrastination and negligence can ultimately lead to. Upgrading commercial parking lot light poles also helps improve security, as more evenly distributed lighting dispels shadows and leaves less opportunity for criminal invasion, vandalism, or violent attack.

Wind load capacitance is another critical factor to address when assessing the stability and viability of existing commercial lighting poles. Local governing codes mandate pole height and wind resistance minimums specific to certain areas. In many western states, high velocity winds can turn dust and rocks into small projectiles that damage both light pole and light fixtures. Worn or damaged poles will automatically fail to meet with current regulatory codes, and lamps stand a good chance of becoming damaged in high winds. You can easily see how a single storm in one of these areas can end up costing your clients more than the purchase and installation of brand new commercial lighting poles.

Newer lighting steel poles available through standard and specification grade distributors like RLLD Commercial Lighting speak to all of these needs with superior material builds, a variety of designs and pole heights, and special glass fixtures that protect minimum glare halide bulbs from heavy winds and particle impact. The efficiency of commercial light pole design has improved so much over recent years that even models measuring only 25 feet in height can now 2500 square feet of height each when fitted with the proper lamps and reflectors. Other factors such as energy efficiency and lamp life are also affected by the quality of commercial light poles.

When you show your clients these facts and figures, you can help them understand that procurement of standard or specification grade commercial lighting poles carries with it certain intrinsic returns on investment. By minimizing replacement costs, power consumption, and liability resulting from accidents, clients of site planners and general contractors can recover their funding through a number of revenue streams that flow back toward them from a newer, more improved-looking facility.

RLLD Commercial Lighting carries a wide variety of industrial & commercial lighting fixtures.
