Hotel Conference Room Lighting Examples

A large hotel on the East Coast had recently renovated one of their conference rooms. The new facility would allow virtually any type of event to be hosted in the room simply by adding different types of tables and chairs. They immediately realized, however, that renovations had caused the conference room to outgrow the capabilities of its primitive fluorescent lighting system. A new lighting system would be needed to accommodate the many new functions that the room would be used for.

We first asked the hotel to visit our lighting case studies to validate our services and send us a list of the many events they planned to rent the room for. This allowed us to get a better grasp on their expectations and indicate the level of complexity that the conference room lighting would require. We realized early on that we would have to create multiple switching points in order to generate different layers of light in different parts of the conference room. Mood setting was not our primary concern here. There were a number of product trade shows coming to town that intended to attract an older audience. The conference room needed the brightest commercial lighting fixtures possible host these events so people could clearly see product details and colors.

We also had to install lighting above a small stage in the conference room. Stage lighting equipment is not our normal forte, but we assured the hotel that we would come up with something exceptional here as part of the overall conference room lighting system. By taking IES files associated with different types of fixtures into our photometric software, we then began to model dozens of hypothetical lighting case examples for the conference room. This allowed us to develop both an equipment list and a plan for lighting control in the conference room.

To meet the demands of bright lighting versus flexible lighting, we installed a combination of fluorescent and halogen lights. For, general lighting that would be required for trade shows, we used 2X4 T8 fluorescent fixtures regulated by electronic ballasts. For indirect light during audiovisual presentations, we recommended placing wall sconces along the sides of the conference room. Finally, to create a light dimmable source that would adjust the conference room lighting to levels appropriate for everything from motivational speaking to formal parties, we installed recessed halogens along the ceiling and over the stage. Event coordinators can now turn all lights on at maximum capacity for trade show, and they can turn off fluorescent lights and use dimmers to adjust halogen lights and wall sconces for all other functions.

Commercial Parking Lot Lighting

Commercial Parking Lot lights have become increasingly more regulated over the years and require expert knowledge beyond electrical expertise to properly configure and install. For many years, the bulk of regulatory codes mandated foot candle minimums for commercial parking lots lights to produce in order to make certain that parked cars were not obscured in shadows and to provide motorists with enough light to see. Over time, however, more laws were passed to minimize glare that can distract drivers and cause accidents. Then, the most recent round of legislation has now swept the nation from coast to coast, not only mandating that all commercial outdoor parking lot lights not only to produce a certain number of footcandles and a minimum amount of glare, but also more tightly regulating the direction of light itself so as to it to parking areas only without spilling into neighboring streets, homes, and businesses.

To light a commercial parking lot effectively, even with standard luminaires and light poles, often requires the contractor to precisely match features and optics to mandated parameters of a given environment. Additional factors like wind load capacities of poles and the various methods of plotting optimal footcandle levels either require a great deal of time doing math or the assistance of a vendor with access to special charts and software. By coming to us, the designer, builder, or DIY electrical contractor has the ability to save multiple steps and to obtain whatever is necessary to get the job done safely, legally, and effectively.
