Interior Lighting Design & Designers

How does this term apply to the industrial world?
There are three types of facilities arenas in which interior lighting design is necessary: factories, warehouses, and offices. All three arenas require systems to be planned prior to the purchase of any equipment to save on energy costs, contribute to worker efficiency, and to maintain a safe work environment.

Why would an industrial firm need to think about office lighting?
Virtually every facility, no matter how devoted to manufacturing or distribution it may be, has office space of some type. Management and administration requires this separate space to oversee production and to make mission critical decisions about the company.

If we don’t have that many offices, do we need the same type of lighting that non-manufacturing corporations use?
Yes, but you probably don’t need as much because you have less square footage and fewer physical places to light. This can be good news to your pocketbook, and should also motivate you to invest in the photometric plan that will help you save in the long run. In principle, interior lighting design in your office space will follows the same principles as it does in service-oriented companies in the general corporate world at large. Your employees will have comfortable task lighting over their desks and cubes.

How can we save the most money on lighting a few executive and administrative offices?
Let an commercial interior lighting design expert help you determine the areas that really NEED special, high-quality lighting, and which areas really do not.

Foyers should have just enough ambient lighting to look professional to visitors and clients. Meeting rooms and executive office suites ought to have lighting controls that will save electricity by dimming the lights and also be able to create unique emotional states if there is a Power Point presentation or special speaker present.

Break rooms and bathrooms are the places where an architectural lighting designer can show you how to save a lot of money by using less expensive fixtures and using only enough light as is absolutely necessary in non-essential areas.

If we are running a factory, why should we spend extra money on interior lighting design when all we do is manufacture products?
You need it because the success of your manufacturing is contingent on precision, time-to-market, and safe working conditions. The quality of light in the building directly affects all of these things. Without sufficient task lighting, assembly line workers cannot see and consequently work at a noticeably slower pace. Morale tends to be rather negative too when people spend long hours at a time in dark areas.

And just how is interior lighting design so important to safety protocols?

People need certain amounts of light to do certain things. If the things they are doing may hurt them and they cannot see to do them, one major accident can shut your factory down. We are not trying to scare you with information you already know. We have all heard stories about accidents that happened around machines. Go back and look at some of these accidents and you’ll realize that some of them were directly related to poor visibility caused by bad lighting.

Save your company the liabilities and heartache with a photometric plan will show exactly how many fixtures your factory needs, where they ought to be mounted, and how they need to be positioned in order to minimize reflective glare and dispel shadows in hazardous work areas.

What will an industrial interior lighting plan do for my warehouse that general high bay lighting doesn’t already do?
General high bay and low bay lights are standard in almost every warehouse, so by no means do we mean to say here that you should stop using them. However, it may serve your interest better to look at the quality and the age of your current lights. Consider, however, how much you spend on maintaining them and operating them. You may discover that newer, more energy efficient lights engineered with longer lamp life could save money on both power and maintenance cycles.

Is there a way to get new lights and save money on more than just electricity and maintenance?
Yes. In principle, you need more light in areas where forklifts traffic cannot afford to have reflective glare from lights that are too bright or improperly mounted. You need precise levels of task light in packaging areas that cannot afford to be dark because inventory loss is likely to occur in darker areas.

In much of your storage space, break areas, bathrooms, hallways, and less traveled parts of the building, (ie: anything non-essential and non-labor intensive), we may could even reduce your lighting and save you additional money here.

Again, we have to an interior photometric lighting design analysis to see exactly what we can do for you. If you do buy equipment from us after buying the analysis, we refund the cost of the analysis and you end up with better, more efficient equipment and a more productive and safe operation at the end of the day.
What types of savings can RLLD offer its clients?
By investing a reasonable fee in an architectural lighting design plan, you gain significant savings by knowing up front exactly what you need before you mistakenly buy the wrong fixtures or buy too many fixtures. You never need to worry about over lighting an area or under lighting an area. An industrial outdoor lighting design plan is also very flexible—offering you variation in light levels based upon the actual need for light in that area. In certain areas such as warehouse loading docks, you will need brighter lighting for safety. In areas where work is not occurring, you only need general lighting for adequate visibility.

If you buy your industrial outdoor products from us, we will refund the value of the photometric design by deducting it from your equipment purchase invoice. This will also save you money on service charges.

Lighting Design & Lighting Designers

What is a lighting designer?
A lighting designer is a technical expert with a high degree of lighting equipment product knowledge and advanced training in photometric calculations and software design. Your commercial lighting designer takes the raw data that pertains to your facility and industry type and uses advanced software platforms to calculate necessary lighting levels and render three-dimensional models of your proposed lighting system.

This allows you to actually experience what a new industrial lighting system would offer you before actually buying the equipment. You can either purchase the design or have a local contractor source your equipment; or you can buy the equipment from us and pay your contractor for the installation labor.

We reimburse the cost of the photometric layout if you buy your industrial or parking lot lighting fixtures from us.

What experience should you look for in a lighting designer?
Look instead at history for your best frame of reference. Previous projects and case studies on our website will give you a very clear picture of level of precision and skill when it comes to building turnkey commercial lighting systems for our clients.

What training should a lighting design expert bring to the table?
Universities do not offer a degree in lighting design per se, so there are no formal credentials to gauge performance by. However, a good lighting designer should have some type of hands-on or academic training in interior architectural design. Knowledge of building interiors is crucial to knowing how light will disperse within a structure of a given type. They must also be able to produce photometric lighting designs.

It is also necessary that the lighting design specialist be a problem solver by nature. Clients confer with specialists because they have problems that need to be solved. The designer should think in terms of solutions that are generated by in-depth consultation with the client and analysis of facility data.

Software training is the last key component of the industrial lighting designer’s skill set. Design software is very complex and requires a high level of expertise to master.

What tools should that designer use on your behalf?
The skilled lighting designer should be able to take an overhead plan of your building and AutoCAD representation of your current lighting system and generate photometric layouts and models using AGI32 photometric design software.

Do you have some photometric examples where I can view your work?

What options should you expect in terms of design, equipment, and installation?
You can expect a turnkey design and system solution if you work with RLLD Commercial Lighting as a single source vendor. We can provide you with the layout of your system and all the necessary equipment. If you need an installer, we can find you one in your area and act as a remote consultant to your contractor if necessary.

How can a lighting designer at RLLD Commercial Lighting offer you savings?
You can expect to get exactly the number of fixtures that you need—never more than what you need. All of our products are American that are designed for maximum energy efficiency and longer lamp life.

Industrial Lighting Systems

How do you define a lighting system?
An industrial lighting system is defined as a group of commercial electrical lighting equipment and controls that works together to perform a cohesive function.

What fixtures and accessories make up a typical industrial lighting system?
In factories and warehouses, high bay lights are used to provide general overhead lighting. Exit lighting is needed in every building to show where doorways are located. Operations that require assembly work require task lighting with higher visibility and minimized glare. Emergency lights also need to be installed over doorways in case the power goes out.

In office areas, call centers, and break rooms, HID lights or fluorescent lights represent the majority of the light fixtures used in interior industrial commercial lighting systems. Lighting equipment that is used indoors can only be used within the four walls of the building. This is because they are engineered to function only in humidity free environments. In moist air or heavy rain, they will not last for very long.

Outdoor light fixtures are far more durable. They are wet location rated, which means, in laymen’s terms, that they are designed to weather high humidity, rainfall, and even thunderstorms in places.

The diversity of fixture options available to a business is a clear indicator of how important it is to contract a lighting design specialist to plan and configure your industrial lighting system. Such a specialist will know exactly what type of equipment you need, and where it needs to be mounted.

What businesses require entire lighting systems?
All commercial entities, regardless of whether or not they carry the technical label of “industrial”, need industrial lighting systems. Retailers, office parks, warehouses, and factories all need both interior and exterior light fixtures. Corporate headquarters especially need the very best systems to reflect their brand and corporate culture.

How are these systems designed?
The design of indoor industrial lighting systems is accomplished through a series of specific steps. The first step is to figure out what type of task will be performed in a given area and how much light that particular task will require.

The nature of the task is very important. Office work, for example, requires general fluorescent lighting. Hallways require some light, but only enough for safety—not high visibility. Assembly work and machine work require the brightest light for maximum visibility, safety, and productivity.

Determination of lighting levels is based upon both general and specific factors. General factors are derived from general design guidelines that fall within IES codes. Specific parameters are customized to the environment and task at hand.

Each client is asked to send a plan view and an elevation view of the facility in AutoCAD format so the industrial lighting designer can feed this information into the software platform that in turn generates a photometric layout and 3D rendering of the new system.

How are different types of fixtures chosen and installed together in relationship to one another?
That depends on several factors. The size of the building and the type of industry are factors that weigh heavily on the number and intensity of fixtures. Furthermore, different areas within and around the building will need different levels of light that also have to be factored into the equation. Ceiling height is also a factor in lighting design.

Industrial Lighting Design

What are the benefits of industrial lighting design by RLLD Commercial Lighting?
Our commercial photometric plans develop both the functional and aesthetic aspects of your new lighting system. These aspects can be summarized in the following four points.

1. Determine exactly how much light you need in a given area.
2. Find the most energy efficient lamps to produce this light.
3. Find the most decorative fixtures to give your building maximum decorative appeal.
4. Determine where these lights need to be mounted.

How does your industrial lighting design process determine how much light we need?
We look at your building, its age, and its usage to calculate the number of foot candles you will need in specific locations using photometric software. These calculations are based upon blueprints and AutoCAD drawings you provide us with, along with answers to specific questions we ask about your operation.

This data, in turn, is fed into an advanced software platform that generates a point by point diagram of lumen output, showing the range and intensity of your new lighting. See our photometric lighting examples.

Can you be sure that the fixtures you provide are indeed the most energy efficient?
Yes. We use only American-made equipment that is made by the top commercial lighting fixture manufacturers in our industry. These fixtures are engineered for maximum lumens-watt efficiency ratios and feature a variety of new technologies that maximize power conservation, lamp life, and optimal beam spread.

The intention here is to get more light with less power, and, when possible, get more light with fewer fixtures.

What is the importance of decoration to industrial lighting design?
That depends entirely on your business type and facility needs. If you are operating a warehouse, you obviously do not need decorative commercial lighting inside. However, it does help to promote your corporate brand to have some aesthetic appeal on your sign or building frontage. Goosenecks are very good for this, as our a number of other architectural lighting fixtures we can provide you with.

If your facility is service-oriented, then your corporate image is vital to your marketing and sales initiatives. Commercial light systems should support your building architecture and provide an attractive face to the world that will enhance your appeal to investors and clients.

You also want your interior lighting to look good to employees who tend to work better when they are surrounding by an aesthetically pleasing environment.

How do you determine where lights need to be mounted?
Industrial parking lot lighting design software calculates the necessary foot candle plots for each specific work environment and outdoor area of your commercial property. It also calculates the optimal lighting angles that will be required to produce these foot candles. Once these angles are determined, we can show your electrical contractor exactly where to mount and position each fixture we sell you.

What if I want to buy my fixtures elsewhere?
You can do that. We will sell you the industrial office lighting design plan and a list of recommended light fixtures. You can then have your local electrical contractor obtain these lights (or their equivalents) through other channels. However, if you buy the equipment from us, we give you the photometric plans for free, and we can ensure that the fixtures you purchase are indeed the best lights for the job.

Industrial Lights & Industrial Lighting

Why should a company work with someone like RLLD to get a photometric design? RLLD Commercial Lighting offers a combination of retail, design, and lighting photometric services.

We have a seasoned design team with over 50 combined years of experience. All of our support staff is domestically based, and all of our products are American made. We have access to the very best industrial light equipment. We can configure an entire system with a firm, total cost and handle shipment to your location as well.

When the equipment arrives, we can also partner and consult with your electrical contractor if any assistance is needed with the installation of our equipment.

What steps are involved in configuring an outdoor lighting system?
Outdoor industrial light must generate adequate lighting levels for safety and perimeter security. It must also be of an appropriate color to respect building architecture.

What steps are involved in configuring an indoor lighting system?
To create an appropriate level of indoor industrial light, we have to do several things. First, we have to determine the type of facility we are lighting. If it is a new facility, we need to get an idea of what the tenants will be using the facility for. If they will be incorporating skylights, we have to make adjustments for a certain amount of natural lighting in the building.

If the client is looking for lighting control, we need to know if they have already hired someone to install the commercial lighting controls, and it helps us to know what types of controls they will be using. If the client is looking to buy equipment first and then look to have industrial light controls installed with the new fixtures, we will help them find a contractor who specializes in this service.

If this is an older facility, then the project is technically classified as a retrofit. Our client will need to supply us with information on their current industrial light levels. A basic light meter can do this, and any local lighting or electrical contractor should be able to come out and provide this reading.

What other materials do you need?
Blueprints of the building are always helpful. If any overhead plans or AutoCAD drawings of the original lighting system are available, those should be sent to us as well.

What features should clients be looking for in terms of light output and energy efficiency?
Indoor industrial commercial light should provide your employees with a feeling of safety in all parts of the building. There should be no dark corridors or corners where a person may feel uncomfortable walking—particularly after sunset. In offices and cubicles, lighting should also be optimized for comfort so employees can perform their tasks without annoyance or eye strain.

For energy efficient lighting, always buy American made products and spend a little more on the newest technology. New technology, although sometimes more costly on the front end of a purchase, is designed to reduce a building’s carbon footprint by using less power consistently over a period of time. This reduction in power consumption means savings that go back into your operations budget.

Commercial Electric Lighting Fixtures

Commercial Electric Lighting fixtures include high intensity discharge lights for parking, landscape, and security lighting, and they also include architectural building lighting that improves corporate branding and provides general lighting for safety and visibility around the physical structure. Commercial electric lighting fixtures should be purchased only after a thorough photometric analysis has been performed on the site. The report this analysis generates will show appropriate lumens levels for various points throughout the property and where best to install luminaires. Consolidating this data first will greatly reduce the problematics and guesswork involved in selecting fixture type, wattages, and manufacturer brand. It will also pass on savings to your client who will be much more inclined to accept a proposal that takes a less is more approach to commercial light fixtures themselves and promises a return on investment through improved lumens output and improved energy efficiency.

Newly developed technologies in high intensity discharge building lighting have now made it possible to offer higher levels of light with lower wattages than ever before. Improved electrical ballast designs and new metal halide pulse start technology have made it possible to produce a much higher level of lumens with fixtures operating at 250 watts or less. Dark sky laws in many cities now mandate a maximum wattage of no more than 250 watts, so proposing this new technology to a client not only offers them the promise of lower power bills, but also ensures compliance with local lighting codes. RLLD Commercial Lighting supplies a full repertoire of HID commercial electric lighting fixtures for every outdoor lighting application.

Parking Lot Lighting
Full cutoff parking lot light are available that feature the latest improvements in optics and reflector technology. These commercial electric parking lot light fixtures are designed with dark sky law compliance and energy savings foremost in mind. Featuring a combination of lower wattage and state of the art, glare free, directional lighting control, these parking lot lights can produce higher footcandle levels with less power. They allow you to both upgrade the quality of lighting in your clientʼs lot and significantly reduce commercial electric bills at the same time.

Landscape and Security Lighting
The most effective landscape exterior lighting systems utilize a combination of high voltage and low voltage lights. The positioning and type of luminaires used varies greatly on the terrain and general size of the property, so there is consequently no hard fast set of commercial electric lighting choices to which the landscape lighting designer is limited. A few general rules of design apply to most landscapes, however, particularly in the area of security lighting. The larger a clientʼs property is, the more it will have dark areas covered by shadows. Floodlights controlled by motion detectors will dispel these areas of darkness if an intruder is sensed by the automated system. They will remain on only long enough to discourage an intruder, and to give security time to respond. This is an excellent way to both protect your clientʼs property and implement a very cost effective form of commercial electric lighting that only operates when needed.

Parking Garage Lighting
RLLD Commercial Lighting has a wide range of commercial warehouse light fixtures designed specifically for parking garage lighting. These fixtures are available in both HID and fluorescent models and are designed to light both horizontal floor space and the vertical cube. The importance of distributing light both horizontally and vertically cannot be overemphasized. Motorists require vertical lighting for proper depth perception and navigation around obstructions such as columns and barricades.

A photometric analysis can quickly pinpoint potential problem areas in your clientʼs parking garage. The goal is not to flood the facility with bright light, but rather to create clear contrast between objects, driving lanes, guard rails, parking spots, and other vehicles. Reading lighting articles and systematically detailing this information first will help you avoid overbidding both the number and intensity of commercial electric light fixtures and also pinpoint optimal installation points for maximum glare free distribution of lighting.

Architectural Building Lights
Lighting a group of corporate buildings may appear a very daunting investment to your clients if they assume that a large number of commercial electric lighting fixtures will be needed to illuminate the structure. Again, as in the case with landscape lights and parking garage lighting, it is not necessary to use very high powered lights to get the job done. Fluorescent wall packs, canopy lights, and sign lights can be used to highlight the most important features on a building and provide visibility for pedestrian traffic around the building at night. Many of these low voltage and highly energy efficient commercial electric lights can reduce power costs for your client by as much as 40%.

All of our commercial electric lights are made here in the U.S.A. As a matter of policy, we work only with major American commercial light manufactures on a non-quota, non-biased distributor basis. This means we have the freedom to recommend the equipment that is most appropriate to your project without having to show preference to a particular brand or fixture type. The cost of the photometric analysis we offer to every client is refunded in full at the time of your equipment purchase, and ongoing support is available over the phone from our team of electrical and commercial lighting design specialists.

Commercial Interior Lighting

Interior lighting design often establishes and creates the quality of a commercial environment. Office space depends on the quality of interior lighting to create an ergonomic and motivated workspace that will contribute to higher productivity and profits. Everything from morale to corporate culture can be affected by a change in the interior lighting. We have several lighting case studies that illustrate the values of good lighting. Commercial factories and warehouse facilities rely upon interior lighting directly for manufacturing and shipping. In their world, proper levels of glare free illumination are a necessity for safe and efficient processes. Some environments, such as manufacturing and assembly, rely so heavily on commercial interior lighting that their very survival depends upon its quality.

The best way to approach commercial interior lighting design is to first get a general picture of industry standard needs in this area in order to formulate a basic plan of attack in proposing a new system. This can be accomplished by reading lighting articles or by checking local lighting codes.

Industrial Organizations
Most manufacturing and warehousing operations care little for how a light looks. They are far more concerned with safety and cost effective operations. Commercial interior warehouse lights in these environments play a major role in ergonomics and employee well-being. Any darkness around the building represents major safety concerns to quality assurance. It is your first duty as a contractor in these environments to propose commercial interior lights that will evenly light all of a facilities floor space and provide sufficient foot candles in the vertical cube to allow for material handling tools such as fork trucks to be safely driven through the facility.

It is also necessary to consider the impact that heat can have on a large building. If you install commercial interior lighting fixtures that are inefficient with thermal management designs, HVAC costs will be higher. RLLD Commercial Lighting has a number of fluorescent, induction, and LED interior lighting fixtures specifically designed to operate at cooler temperatures. Thess, combined with their innate power saving designs, helps greatly reduce overhead for industrial clients and can often tip the balance in favor of your proposal.

Please keep in mind that industrial facilities are the most heavily regulated of all buildings, so it is crucial that you ensure that your client will meet with all OSHA and ANSI codes. If your client is interested in obtaining LEED certification, call an RLLD Commercial interior lighting design expert to find out about the latest energy efficient technology ideal for earning points toward a certificate.

Service Based Organizations
Good morale is a necessity ingredient to service based office environments. Commercial interior lighting here should blend the task and the decorative to produce an ergonomically sound as well as decorative quality of light. Normally, you would have to create multiple layers of both direct and indirect light to achieve such an effect, and you have to use a multitude of fixture types, mounts, and lamps.

One great way to minimize the number of actual light fixtures for a small company with a tight budget is to install commercial interior lighting controls. Dimmers and wireless remotes will make lighting customized to personal preference while simultaneously minimizing power consumption. The right commercial lighting controls can turn one set of interior lights into many by programming multiple themes into a central controller. These themes can be activated with wall boxes, and hand-held remotes to create different moods and levels of luminosity.

Retailers
Retail clients require interior lights that render color equivalent to that produced by natural daylight. The reason for this is obvious. Merchandise on the shelf must look as natural and good as possible to sell. Like offices, stores require multiple layers of light. Typically, one level of light illuminates the floor space for customers and staff, and the second layer of light focuses on product merchandising.

It is paramount absolutely essential that you choose the right commercial interior building lighting fixtures that will accomplish these tasks do this as cost effectively as possible. Retail profit margins are normally rather slim, so the more you offer trim a store’s electric, the more readily they will embrace both the technology and the design you propose.

Hospitality Clients
Hotels, country clubs, restaurants, and resorts need you to take an eclectic approach to commercial interior lighting. Virtually every location contains a variety of buildings whose interior architecture varies on a per room basis. Commercial interior lighting is able to create everything from general task lighting to special decorative and associative aesthetic themes. Most hospitality clients also expect you to use lamps, fixtures, mounts and accessories that specifically compliment the decorum and brand of the establishment. Usually, the more removed from mundane reality an organization seeks to be, the more elaborate and eclectic its commercial interior lighting system will need to be.

Parking Garage Lighting

Lighting within a parking garage depends on a number of factors such as the height of the ceiling, the volume of vehicle versus pedestrian traffic, potential obstacles such as support beams, and the angles of corners and ramps that can potentially create problem areas of shadow. Ideally, parking lot lights should create five foot candles per square foot both horizontally and within the vertical cube itself. While many developers pay close attention to horizontal foot candle levels, vertical lighting is actually more critical. A person looking at a poorly lit column, wall, or oncoming vehicle will not be able to clearly distinguish its boundaries and may also have problems judging its distance from his or her location. Lighting commercial outdoor parking spaces is also important because it eliminates shadows that could hide intruders or criminals.

Calculating these measurements often takes a great deal of time. Sometimes, it even requires special software that smaller companies may not have access to, or be able to afford. This is where RLLD Commercial Lighting specialists can offer an added value. With basic information such as parking garage dimensions, total square footage, and general usage statistics, we can help the contractor save a step by calculating the levels of light that a parking garage or lighting automotive dealership needs for optimal safety and functionality.

Once the quantity of light needed has been determined, it is necessary to also calculate the quality of light needed.
There are two major obstacles to overcome when lighting parking garages: glare and the “cavern effect.” The term refers to a phenomenon where the garage actually looks darker than it really is, contributing to distorted depth perception and affecting the judgment of drivers and pedestrians. Glare is a major obstacle as well to clear visibility and occurs when the lighting in a particular area is noticeably brighter than surrounding general lighting. Both glare and the cavern effect represent safety hazards that must be preempted.

The most common parking garage lighting fixtures are HID lights.
RLLD Commercial Lighting recommends using Metal Halide or High Pressure Sodium HID parking lot light fixtures in semi cutoff or refractor designs. Cut off fixtures are very good at keeping glare to a minimum, but they actually magnify the cavern effect and render very poor vertical lighting. Semi cutoffs do a good job of eliminating the cavern effect altogether, and with the proper fixture, will also do a very good job of lighting basic vertical surfaces such as walls and thick columns. For optimal vertical lighting and clear visibility, however, you should use refractor parking lot lighting fixtures. These keep the ceiling areas, vertical cube, and mall parking lot areas consistently lit throughout the facility.

Business building lights and parking garage lights can house Metal Halide lamps, High Pressure Sodium lamps, or fluorescent lamps. Selecting a lamp type is just as much a matter of preference as it is of practical function and operating budget. HPS lamps last much longer, but they render color very poorly. Industrial facilities with little concern for aesthetics might want to go with HPS simply because it will help minimize replacement costs. Metal Halide lamps are superb for corporate parking garage lighting because they give off a clear, bright light and can actually create an upbeat atmosphere with a light source nearly equivalent to daylight in quality. Because of their short lamp life (7,500 hours), however, MH lamps may not be the best choices for smaller companies who are feeling the bite of the recession. These organizations may want to consider fluorescent lamps instead. Fluorescent lamps have the best color rendering, the longest lamp life, and the highest lumens per watt efficiency.
