Lighting Design & Lighting Designers

What is a lighting designer?
A lighting designer is a technical expert with a high degree of lighting equipment product knowledge and advanced training in photometric calculations and software design. Your commercial lighting designer takes the raw data that pertains to your facility and industry type and uses advanced software platforms to calculate necessary lighting levels and render three-dimensional models of your proposed lighting system.

This allows you to actually experience what a new industrial lighting system would offer you before actually buying the equipment. You can either purchase the design or have a local contractor source your equipment; or you can buy the equipment from us and pay your contractor for the installation labor.

We reimburse the cost of the photometric layout if you buy your industrial or parking lot lighting fixtures from us.

What experience should you look for in a lighting designer?
Look instead at history for your best frame of reference. Previous projects and case studies on our website will give you a very clear picture of level of precision and skill when it comes to building turnkey commercial lighting systems for our clients.

What training should a lighting design expert bring to the table?
Universities do not offer a degree in lighting design per se, so there are no formal credentials to gauge performance by. However, a good lighting designer should have some type of hands-on or academic training in interior architectural design. Knowledge of building interiors is crucial to knowing how light will disperse within a structure of a given type. They must also be able to produce photometric lighting designs.

It is also necessary that the lighting design specialist be a problem solver by nature. Clients confer with specialists because they have problems that need to be solved. The designer should think in terms of solutions that are generated by in-depth consultation with the client and analysis of facility data.

Software training is the last key component of the industrial lighting designer’s skill set. Design software is very complex and requires a high level of expertise to master.

What tools should that designer use on your behalf?
The skilled lighting designer should be able to take an overhead plan of your building and AutoCAD representation of your current lighting system and generate photometric layouts and models using AGI32 photometric design software.

Do you have some photometric examples where I can view your work?

What options should you expect in terms of design, equipment, and installation?
You can expect a turnkey design and system solution if you work with RLLD Commercial Lighting as a single source vendor. We can provide you with the layout of your system and all the necessary equipment. If you need an installer, we can find you one in your area and act as a remote consultant to your contractor if necessary.

How can a lighting designer at RLLD Commercial Lighting offer you savings?
You can expect to get exactly the number of fixtures that you need—never more than what you need. All of our products are American that are designed for maximum energy efficiency and longer lamp life.

Commercial Lighting Design

RLLD Commercial Lighting design services are intended to provide adjunct support to the contractor to expedite the planning stages of a proposal, to help the client and the contractor get more for their monies worth, and to implement a systematic, precision approach to procurement that minimizes the margin of error in selecting the right fixtures for the right job. Professional commercial lighting design companies have come to rely upon RLLD Commercial Lightingʼs design experts as a virtual extension of their marketing and sales teams. RLLD Commercial Lighting designers and account managers proactively assist in developing solutions for commercial lighting clients, designing entire systems from the ground up so the contractor can save man hours on calculations and schematics and focus more energy on negotiations to win the bid.

We are able to deliver this service to our clients because of very high-end, proprietary commercial lighting design software we have purchased to create photometric modeling. This software allows us to take the answers to a few basic questions we ask you about your clientʼs site and facility and input that data into our computers. Our suite of design programs then interprets this data and renders a complete photometric analysis of your clients building and surrounding property. This valuable schematic details such critical factors in lighting design and mandatory foot candle minimums for parking areas and outdoor recreation areas. It also shows the best positions to install fixtures to achieve these lighting levels, and it shows the best ways to mount these fixtures for optimal results.

This approach to commercial indoor lighting design is an excellent way to win a bid in the midst of a recession. Its focus on precision purchasing as opposed to bulk purchasing takes a realistic approach to equipment itemization and costs. RLLD Commercial Lighting believes you should design a system with no more and no less fixtures than are absolutely necessary to meet the needs of your client. While in the past making such an exact determination may have meant hours of painstaking calculations, this is no longer the case today. With a photometric analysis, you can literally see where the lights need to go and quickly determine the exact nature of the fixtures your client will need by asking three basic questions:

1. Where is the fixture located?
2. What does the fixture light?
3. How is the fixture mounted?

If you still cannot determine the ideal fixture after looking at each of these three factors, your commercial architectural lighting design specialist can recommend commercial grade and specification grade fixture options that will bring superior results to your clientʼs table. We have a vast inventory of HID lights, including the new pulse start metal halide lights that feature some of the most advanced reflectors and optics in the lighting industry. Such engineering is critical if you are working in an area heavily regulated by lighting control regulations and dark sky laws. Proposing fixtures that are made specifically for better directional control of lighting and glare reduction puts your client in the best possible light without annoying nearby residents and business owners with light pollution.

RLLD Commercial Lighting design experts can also outfit your proposal with the latest energy saving outdoor fluorescent lighting fixtures and outdoor commercial lighting equipment. This will work wonders for your clientʼs operations budget, cutting costs without sacrificing the quality of amount of illumination in the process. We also carry an entire selection of high-tech energy efficient commercial lights designed for maximum power conservation. We have induction lighting for indoor and outdoor commercial lighting, and LED light designed for commercial outdoor lighting, parking lot lighting, street lighting, area lighting, and commercial indoor lighting.

All of our commercial lights are designed and manufactured in the United States. No foreign manufactured products will ever darken our invoice. RLLD Commercial Lighting believes in supporting and recession proofing the American manufacturer as well as the American commercial lighting design specialist. All adjunct parking lot lighting design services are free as well to clients and serious inquirers, and they are also available for a reasonable fee to casual inquirers and those in need of occasional assistance.

Tennis Court Lights & Tennis Court Lighting Packages

The most effective tennis court lighting fixtures are forward throw fixtures which feature either precision optics or cut off designs that focus maximized lighting levels on the court and minimize glare from surrounding viewpoints. Tennis court lighting design should always be developed with two simultaneous objectives in mind: lighting the court and lighting the ball in play. Optimal illumination depends on striking this balance, and this balance in turn depends upon several other factors such as the number and location of light poles, the type and number of fixtures mounted on each pole, the size of the court, and the number of footcandles needed for the size and function of that court.

When all of these many factors are properly assessed and balanced together with one another, a uniform distribution of the light and non-glare optics is achieved. Ideal tennis court lighting should illuminate the entire court and extend approximately 6ʼ beyond the sidelines and 10ʼ behind the base lines. Metal Halide luminaries are the most common HID source used for tennis court lighting.

Choosing the Right Tennis Court Lights, Poles, and Accessories
Customers can go to our online sports lighting store and buy individual lighting fixtures, supplies, and individual light poles and lamps. Typically, fixtures come equipped with a 1000 watt, Metal Halide bulb. These sports lights are manufactured for both residential and commercial applications, so customers have the flexibility of installing these devices in a variety of settings. RLLD Commercial tennis court light poles come in a variety of heights and can be used for narrow, tournament, and club size tennis courts. For the convenience of both professional designers and certified electricians contracted by homeowners, we have created tennis court lighting packages that are specifically approved and designed for six standard tennis court layouts.

A few additional points bear further attention. Some of our tennis court lighting kits feature a double lamp pole light fixture. This offers a more even spread of illumination and a different look compared to that produced by a conventional, single lamp pole. We also offer quad light poles that have four die cast light fixtures for a distinctive appearance, and we include all necessary accessories for these lighting kits, include mounting hardware, brackets, and lamps. RLLD Commercial Lighting tennis court light kit designs can also be used with basketball and volleyball courts, or any other type of athletic or sports lighting area that requires superior lighting for game purposes. We have tennis lights for club or tournament courts, and we also have packages for single and dual playing fields as well.

Tennis Court Fixture Mounting Methods

In tennis court lighting you can choose between low-mast and high-mast pole configurations. Generally speaking, residential tennis court lighting is better accomplished with low-mast lighting, while high mast lighting is used in areas where higher light levels are required. Low-mast systems used in conjunction with sharp cut-off luminaries produce good uniformity, low glare, reduced amounts of spill light and are relatively easy to maintain.

Country clubs, resorts, five star hotels, and municipal parks can select from over 40 sports lights specifically designed for tennis courts and athletic field lighting. We also have many tennis court lighting articles that go into some Call an RLLD Commercial Lighting Specialist now for detailed suggestions on how to use these high-end, durable tennis court lights and accessories. Consultation over the phone is free to clients and serious inquirers, and competitive fee-based consultation is also available for those seeking information only from our expert staff.

Baseball Field & Ball Park Lights

The best lights for a baseball field or stadium are not the brightest possible lights, but rather the most evenly distributed, glare-free athletic sports field lighting fixtures. Too often, DIY electricians overspend when buying baseball field lights, either buying both too many fixtures or getting fixtures with too high a wattage output. This not only creates more exorbitant front-end costs, but it also generates higher lighting bills and can also create glare for smaller baseball diamonds. Professional designers know that retail grade baseball and softball lights pre-mounted to poles simply will not place Americaʼs Game in the right kind of light. Advanced foot-candle calculations based upon the size and location of the field must first be worked out in advanced, then commercial grade fixtures with sophisticated reflectors must be selected and positioned at exactly the right height on poles in order to produce maximum lumens per wattage efficiency. This is critical for mid-air lighting of the ball in play, and something that fixed-mounted light pole fixtures cannot provide. Also, pre-configured baseball lighting will almost always degrade more rapidly when exposed to extremes in weather, and when they begin to rust, they present an unsightly nuisance that eventually exposes wires to humidity and creates short circuit and possible fire hazard.

While commercial grade baseball and football field lights do represent a front end for the small town, peewee league, little league, or church camp, they can nevertheless be purchased from RLL Design at competitive prices on the front end, and they be configured in such a fashion as to create a energy-saving return on investment on the back end. This is why so many small towns, camps, and churches on a budget rely upon us for baseball lighting fixtures, poles, mounts and accessories. RLL Design specialists add years of consultation and lighting expertise to the proposal of the professional looking to generate savings and ROI, and they add consultative value to the knowledge of the do-it-yourselfer at a savings of cost-per-hour labor fees. Many clients are often amazed when they see how less can truly be more when it comes to baseball field and stadium lighting case studies. For example, a small little league field seldom needs more than one or two 1000-watt lamps along the baseline, and a single or double 400-watt baseball light over home plate. Determining the exact wattage to choose and where to install the fixture requires calculation of the size and location of the field and detailed knowledge of light pollution laws in oneʼs area. Having this knowledge available from your baseball light fixture supply distributor is an added value that saves you time preparing proposals and prevents costly mistakes when you decide to install the purchase and lights yourself.

Savings arenʼt limited to the small town or non-profit organization only, either. RLLD baseball lights are controlled by advanced ballast technology that renders superior electron flow, making them ideal for larger baseball stadiums and professional league lighting. RLLD baseball lights are designed to resist corrosion in a multitude of climates. Featuring a powder coated die cast housing with formed aluminum lids, they can endure a greater level of stress from wind and rain. These baseball light fixtures further protect lamp life with tempered flat glass insulated with gasket seals and aluminum clamp bands. By adding anodized aluminum reflectors to magnify lumens output and photometric distribution, you can further customize each fixture and achieve greater lighting levels with less power consumption. With the help of your RLLD sports lighting specialist, you can choose from types 3, 4, 5, or 6 optics to achieve maximum visibility for safe play.

Superior ballasts also extend the lamp life of RLLD baseball lighting fixtures and produces a more reliable, consistent spread of illumination necessary for lighting a larger stadium. For optimal results, it is best for both contractors and DIY electricians to work with a sports lighting design experts who will help them purchase poles and fixtures separately, then configure them into a specialty kit or custom lighting design. Each baseball field is unique, so a variety of mounting brackets is also required to achieve precise positioning of light fixtures on poles so that directional angle of incidence is optimized and glare is minimized.

For baseball fields with have light poles already mounted in place, you can work with one of our specialists who will fit them with new mounting arms and light fixtures. Our baseball sports lighting fixtures can also be mounted on any number of pole types and wall mounts, making them multi-functional for other types of sports and recreation. This is an added value we like to pass on to contractors competitively bidding jobs for clients who have very limited procurement budgets, and it also serves to help smaller facilities looking to self-install a lighting system that can serve many needs at once.

RLL Design understands that both professional and end-user clients simply do not have the time to do all the lighting research and calculation necessary to effectively develop a baseball or sports arena lighting system. To help serve these organizations and individuals, we staff a team of Experts who will answer any question in our online forum, and we will help any serious inquiries over the phone.

Photometric Lighting Analysis & Design

Obtaining a 3-D photometric report on your client’s property is perhaps the best thing you can do to ensure maximum efficiency of the commercial lighting system you install and maximum long-term client satisfaction with the operability and overall aesthetic impact of that system. Photometric analysis software, however, is often far outside the price range of small lighting design firms and independent electrical contractors. Typically, only the larger firms have the budget to purchase photometric analysis software and the manpower to use it. Smaller companies and individuals are therefore at a clear disadvantage when it comes to proposing new equipment. That is, unless they can find a partner company who has photometric analysis software that can generate reports for them.

This is precisely why RLLD Commercial Lighting invested in photometric analysis software—to give the independent contractor and the small lighting design firm a competitive advantage that was previously unavailable to them. Using this software, we can create one or more reports on your client’s location that will enable us to select the very best luminaires for the new system. The square footage, vertical cube space, and general layout of your client’s facility is input into our photometric analysis software first. This data can then be used to generate foot candle charts and photometric reports that pinpoint the very best locations to install lighting fixtures. These reports can be printed both as technical spec sheets and as user friendly documents complete with pictures and general descriptions for end user review. Having a document like this to place alongside of your proposal gives you additional negotiating power with your client and proves to the decision maker you have thoroughly understood their needs and done your homework in response.

For indoor lighting case studies, photometric analysis software allows us to work on a room by room basis. We can run different scenarios through the system according based on either hypothetical luminance levels or fixtures in the room. This allows us to identify potential problem areas where objects in the room may cast dark shadows and disrupt the aesthetic and obscure visibility. Knowing where these problems areas are most likely to pop up helps us recommend both the best luminaire models and pinpoint the optimal angles at which to mount them and quote lighting packages.

Because we supply commercial warehouse lighting fixtures from a number of different manufacturers (all based in the United States), it is important to consider all options before making a final choice. Each manufacturer offers unique fixture designs and energy efficiency safeguards, and lamp life varies as well between the various proprietary designs. What may be the best fixture to use in a small, single building office may not be the best choice for a multi-building site or office park.

The software actually contains manufacturer’s spec sheets and engineering documents on specific fixtures in different categories. These reports can be pulled and a luminaire comparison report instantly generated that details fixture optics, lumens per watt efficiency, and expected lamp life. Cross referencing light levels and fixture placement reports with specific data on each fixture made by a leading US lighting manufacturer hones the effectiveness of the photometric analysis to a razor-edge precision.

While we do charge a fee for photometric analysis, we refund the amount in full should you move forward in a business relationship with RLLD Commercial Lighting and purchase your commercial landscape lighting equipment from us. Casual inquirers and companies seeking adjunct support are nonetheless welcome to call us and purchase a report to use in any project and are under no obligation to buy commercial lighting products in conjunction with the report.

In either case, we are here to help the independent contractor gain a competitive advantage on a more athletic level playing field.

Commercial Outdoor Parking Lot Lighting

How important is it to use high wattage fixtures in large outdoor parking lots?
There are times when high wattage parking lot lighting fixtures are necessary, but not every large facility requires the most powerful lights to produce optimal results. Other factors such as optics, luminaire housing and its relationship to directional control of lighting, and systematic planning of the overall outdoor lighting to find the best angles of incidence produce much better results—with less power expended and an overall lower operating budget for your client.

How significant is the role optics and reflectors in outdoor parking lot lighting?
The significance of optical engineering is probably greater now than ever before. Light trespass laws have become increasingly strict in most parts of the country. You want your client to enjoy a safe and comfortable environment, but you do not want your neighbors to feel annoyed by outdoor light that encroaches beyond the perimeter of your parking lot. By selecting parking lot lighting fixtures that have the very best reflectors and shields, it is possible to achieve a delicate balance between intensity and containment which otherwise would require lowering the levels of light and compromising foot candle levels.

Can luminaire housing design play a significant role in further minimizing glare and outdoor light trespass in and around a parking lot?
Absolutely. Housing design is a critical factor in distributing luminance, as a matter of fact. Some designs, like full cutoffs, aim the light directly downward onto the pavement below. Others like semi direct it downward at an angle, spreading it gently over the parking lot. Sometimes it may not be immediately obvious to determine just what housings will produce the best results just by walking around a client’s parking lot or examining a CAD drawing. Lighting an establishment that has uniquely configured parking lot islands or a storefront that requires a view free from the obstructions of commercial light poles often requires very advanced calculations, and a custom solution beyond strictly standard designs.

Lighting a uniquely designed or asymmetrical parking lot is best done by having RLLD Commercial lighting design and render a full, detailed photometric analysis of the facility first.
Our design team can actually create a three-dimensional model of your client’s parking lot rendered that will show how one or more proposed outdoor lot lighting layouts will look. Multiple variables such as foot candle density, angle of incidence, and recommended pole heights can all be simultaneously calculated and adjusted either collectively or individually. This allows us to help you forecast outcomes prior to purchasing and to determine in advance exactly what equipment will need to be installed. This can then be validated by one of our commercial lighting case studies.

Are all of your outdoor lights and poles made in the USA?

Yes. We strongly believe that American made luminaires are the best in the world. We also feel that working with US manufacturers helps our own economy and passes additional benefits on to contractors and end users in the form of shorter lead time and more dependable written warranties that back up the quality and the performance of the equipment we sell.
