Commercial LED Business Lighting

Although LED lights represent a significant front end investment for businesses, the multitude of features, advantages, and benefits this technology contributes toward savings on power costs and green building energy efficiency cannot be understated. Because of recent estimates that 40% of all the world’s greenhouse gases are generated by inefficient buildings, investing in new technology now may not only represent a progressive step toward human progress, but it may also soon become a matter of compliance with new legislation that will no doubt seek to curb energy costs associated with lighting.

Considering these facts, let’s begin our analysis of LED commercial business lighting by looking at how this technology specifically helps earn points that can contribute toward earning a LEED construction or renovation certificate.

LEED CERTIFICATION
LED lights for businesses are extremely important to any organization seeking LEED certification. Even though no single product in and of itself can certify a building as “green,” LED business lighting fixtures offer tremendous advantages that earn points for LEED certification on four major levels: energy and atmosphere, sustainable sites, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and process design. General contractors, architects and builders, electrical contractors, and commercial site lighting designers can encourage business owners to invest now in LED lights, assuring them that in the long run the money they save will both recover the procurement costs of the purchase and help recession proof their business by reducing overhead and accumulating a budget surplus. Also, earning points toward a LEED lighting certification can also help recession proofs a budget by preparing a business in advance for the inevitable changes that will very soon sweep the entire lighting industry as global concerns over energy consumption and climate change mounts.

ENERGY AND ATMOSPHERE (1-10 Points)
It has been determined that for every 1 million Kwh in energy we save in the world, 777 metric tons of carbon dioxide will be eliminated from Earth’s atmosphere. LED's can make significant progress toward this goal.

Because LED business lighting is so much more efficient than incandescent and HID lighting, it dissipates less heat into space. Cooler temperatures in turn take the strain off of the HVAC system and help lower cooling costs. Another advantage that LED business lights offer is a much more uniform and directional form of illumination than do traditional lights. Because of this, lower levels of light can be utilized to meet minimal lighting requirements, thus further driving power costs down.

SUSTAINABLE SITES (1 Point)
Light pollution is a major concern in a growing number of large and mid-sized cities that are experiencing increased urban sprawl and an influx of job seekers. RLLD Commercial Lighting equips businesses with full cutoff LED site and architectural area luminaires, including lighting case studies to earn light pollution credit.

INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY (1 Point)
Indoor lights are always better when they are controllable and easy to set to desired levels. Because indoor LED business business ight fixtures are fully dimmable, they can earn the 1 point credit for lighting control provided they are connected to the correct type of controller.

INNOVATION AND DESIGN QUALITY (1-4 Points)
LED lighting represents a revolutionary source of technology that is environmentally friendly and extremely high performance. Any business that integrates LED light technology into its scope of operations can potentially earn credit toward certification on the basis of progressive thinking and proactive change.

ADDITIONAL ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
LED light fixtures and lamps for business lighting save money not only on power costs, but also on disposal and maintenance costs. Because these luminaires can last for over 100,000 hours, replacements are very infrequent when compared to HID or, even worse, incandescent.

LEDs also offer the true pioneers in business the first truly viable light source through photovoltaic means. In the past, it simply was not possible to get enough solar power to light an incandescent light or HID lamp. However, since LEDs require minimum voltage compared to other lamp types, solar energy becomes a very real potential source of power that could truly change the world and end the energy crisis in the future.

Finally, because light bars in these luminaires contain no mercury, there is no toxic waste disposal fee, and many LED fixtures used to light business sites and interiors feature aluminum die cast build that is completely recyclable.

INDOOR AND OUTDOOR LED LUMINAIRES AVAILABLE
RLLD Commercial Lighting supplies businesses with every available type of indoor and outdoor LED luminaire. These commercial lights feature unique fixture and heat dissipation technology that maintains operating temperatures at a minimum and enhances the precision of photometric distribution and overall site lighting efficiency.

All major site and architectural area lighting fixture types are represented in our online inventory. Indoor LED lighting for businesses can range from the purely decorative to the purely functional, or it can be linked to lighting controls and dimmers to blend elements of both function and form.

Commercial Exterior Architectural Lighting

Working with a design services hardware vendor like RLLD Commercial Lighting will give your business, no matter how large or small, access to resources few of your competitors can obtain, saving you time and money in the process and providing a level of scientific precision few of your competitors can rival. With specialized architectural lighting design software, we will input the data that you gather from any municipal, commercial, academic, government, or sports facility site and scientifically calculate the precise photometric lighting requirements for optimal foot candle density and directional lighting control. These calculations are vital to the development of a competitive and cost effective proposal that your client will feel confident about. Remember, what you propose today should perform for many years with a minimum of future complications, expenditures, or mishaps.

Ideally, exterior architectural lighting should compliment natural and architectural elements with luminaires whose fixture designs reflect the geometric themes and subtle nuances of the environment they light. These luminaires must also function with optimal efficiency and deliver the quality of light that purely functional site lighting fixtures provide. It is necessary for your clients to realize from the beginning of the consultation process that exterior architectural lights absolutely have to anticipate stringent lighting control laws now taking effect across the nation. New lumens per watt efficiency requirements, light pollution restrictions, and limitations on the actual lamps that can be used are becoming increasingly. What you propose to your client today must be able to withstand not only the forces of nature and time, but also the forces of change within human infrastructure and society. Creating an exterior architectural lighting design customized to the exact activities and aesthetic of your client’s site with minimal maintenance, upgrades, and replacements is something we specialize in helping you do.

This often equates to something like a Spartan approach to fixture placement. As increased efficiency and efficacy in HID and LED outdoor lights make it possible to get more lumens per watt from the average lamp, we can illuminate larger areas than ever before with fewer physical fixtures and less obtrusive equipment. This gives a huge competitive advantage to freelance electrical contractors and smaller design firms who normally lack the funding to invest in high-end development software packages and lack the manpower to engage in long-term collaborative design sessions with clients who know intuitively what they want, but lack the technical knowledge to spec out the details in a timely manner. RLLD Commercial Lighting experts can handle this phase of your proposal development for you by taking the raw data you collect from your client a point-by-point schematic of the entire exterior architectural lighting system.

As a general rule, we subdivide exterior architectural lighting systems into components representative of specific operations and aesthetics. This is necessary because different elements of site lighting often fall into overlapping categories of regulation. Parking lot lights and parking lot light poles are good examples of this. Parking lot lights must meet the minimum foot candle requirements of the local community in which they are installed. They must also control their light output in such a fashion as to fully comply with local dark sky laws, and the poles used to support them must meet wind load requirements mandated by higher levels of government. Commercial garage lighting requires equal attention to both vertical and horizontal foot candle density, and calculating this delicate balance requires either access to specialty software or a degree in high-level calculus. Building and landscape lights must keynote geometric forms, and these as well must be both energy efficient and optimized for glare reduction and light pollution control to remain compliant with government mandates.

The key to developing a truly superior architectural exterior lighting system is to use only enough visible commercial lighting supplies to compliment the scenery without dominating its elements. Decorative fixtures should be visible, yet “low profile” in their positioning, and they must always bring more attention to the objects they light than they do their own appearance. By paying attention to this simple, but much understated fact in the world of lighting design, you will give yourself an enormous competitive advantage over rival bids that over emphasize equipment and miss the essence of precision design and true site enhancement.

Outdoor Canopy Lighting Fixtures

Canopy lights are ideal for providing light for pedestrian traffic around a building at night and for providing security lighting around the building. They are heavily used by industrial facilities that operate late at night, such as factories with round the clock production, or warehouses that need light for after hours shipping and receiving. Other businesses that rely heavily on outdoor commercial canopy lighting are grocery stores and filling stations. Retail strip centers also occasionally use these fixtures to illuminate the walkway that runs in front of a group of stores. In the non-business sector, they are also very common in public schools and covered walkways on college campuses, and you tend to see them a lot around civic centers and public recreation facilities as well.

It is important to determine first the foot candle density your client needs around the building or underneath the awing that you plan to light. Many people assume that the brighter the canopy lights, the better. This is not the case, however. If the lights under a gas station canopy are too bright, motorists cannot steer safely between the pumps, and the glare from the lights makes it hard for them to see when they drive away. The same thing can happen to people parking near an awning with canopy lights that are too intense. They too will have trouble parking, and be temporarily blinded by too much light. It is important therefore to get a photometric analysis from RLLD Commercial Lighting that will tell you exactly how much architectural illumination your client needs under that awning or canopy. We can then help you choose a lamp whose lumens output will create the optimal footcandle density without generating excess light pollution in the process. Frosted lens covers may be necessary to make certain that the light is bright, but diffused so that too much of it doesn’t hit the eyes. This is normally advisable any time you install canopy lights near a covered parking area. Other glare shielding options should be considered based upon the type of facility you are servicing and where the fixtures are installed. Your specialist can help you with all necessary calculations to determine the exact fixture type and model you need.

There are some other important considerations to take into account when choosing canopy lighting fixtures for your client’s location. One is the light source itself. Your clients will have end up facing unexpected costs if they are not equipped with the best fixtures with the longest anticipated lifespan. We recommend that with very few exceptions you propose canopy lights that are energy efficient and feature lives of at least 10,000 hours. A variety of lamp types are available through our online store that fit this criteria, including HID high pressure sodium and metal halide lights. We also carry mercury vapor canopy commercial lights, but these have been outlawed in certain places like Arizona and some states along the Eastern Seaboard. If you are in one of these areas, we recommend substituting either HID metal halides (it normally tends to output a “whiter” light than HPS) or canopy lights with fluorescent lamps that have frosted lenses and are excellent sources of bright, glare free lighting.

Two more important things to keep in mind when choosing canopy or area lights for your clients are: voltage options and the resiliency of the light fixtures themselves. Non profits, city governments, churches, and schools have very thigh operating budgets and can benefit greatly from the reduced costs that low voltage lighting can bring them. At the same time, many of these facilities, due to ignorance and a general lack of enlightenment among mob elements in our society, are often targets of deliberate criminal mischief and vandalism. To help protect your clients, ask your RLLD Commercial Lighting representative about vandal proof fixtures that are impervious to the force of typical assaults on property and equipment.

All consultation services offered by our team, as well as photometric analyses of client sites, are free to clients and serious inquirers. Casual inquiries can receive the same level of service for a small, reasonable fee.

Photometric Lighting Analysis & Design

Obtaining a 3-D photometric report on your client’s property is perhaps the best thing you can do to ensure maximum efficiency of the commercial lighting system you install and maximum long-term client satisfaction with the operability and overall aesthetic impact of that system. Photometric analysis software, however, is often far outside the price range of small lighting design firms and independent electrical contractors. Typically, only the larger firms have the budget to purchase photometric analysis software and the manpower to use it. Smaller companies and individuals are therefore at a clear disadvantage when it comes to proposing new equipment. That is, unless they can find a partner company who has photometric analysis software that can generate reports for them.

This is precisely why RLLD Commercial Lighting invested in photometric analysis software—to give the independent contractor and the small lighting design firm a competitive advantage that was previously unavailable to them. Using this software, we can create one or more reports on your client’s location that will enable us to select the very best luminaires for the new system. The square footage, vertical cube space, and general layout of your client’s facility is input into our photometric analysis software first. This data can then be used to generate foot candle charts and photometric reports that pinpoint the very best locations to install lighting fixtures. These reports can be printed both as technical spec sheets and as user friendly documents complete with pictures and general descriptions for end user review. Having a document like this to place alongside of your proposal gives you additional negotiating power with your client and proves to the decision maker you have thoroughly understood their needs and done your homework in response.

For indoor lighting case studies, photometric analysis software allows us to work on a room by room basis. We can run different scenarios through the system according based on either hypothetical luminance levels or fixtures in the room. This allows us to identify potential problem areas where objects in the room may cast dark shadows and disrupt the aesthetic and obscure visibility. Knowing where these problems areas are most likely to pop up helps us recommend both the best luminaire models and pinpoint the optimal angles at which to mount them and quote lighting packages.

Because we supply commercial warehouse lighting fixtures from a number of different manufacturers (all based in the United States), it is important to consider all options before making a final choice. Each manufacturer offers unique fixture designs and energy efficiency safeguards, and lamp life varies as well between the various proprietary designs. What may be the best fixture to use in a small, single building office may not be the best choice for a multi-building site or office park.

The software actually contains manufacturer’s spec sheets and engineering documents on specific fixtures in different categories. These reports can be pulled and a luminaire comparison report instantly generated that details fixture optics, lumens per watt efficiency, and expected lamp life. Cross referencing light levels and fixture placement reports with specific data on each fixture made by a leading US lighting manufacturer hones the effectiveness of the photometric analysis to a razor-edge precision.

While we do charge a fee for photometric analysis, we refund the amount in full should you move forward in a business relationship with RLLD Commercial Lighting and purchase your commercial landscape lighting equipment from us. Casual inquirers and companies seeking adjunct support are nonetheless welcome to call us and purchase a report to use in any project and are under no obligation to buy commercial lighting products in conjunction with the report.

In either case, we are here to help the independent contractor gain a competitive advantage on a more athletic level playing field.

Business Building Lighting

RLLD Commercial Outdoor Lighting knows that Building Lighting contractors are facing some hard times ahead. With the recession getting worsening every month, there is talk of a depression going on everywhere from You Tube to the mainstream media. RLLD Commercial Lighting wishes to remind Building Lighting designers that even during the Great Depression of the 20th Century, many millionaires were made in spite of a worldwide economic crisis and a pending World War. We believe that American entrepreneurs, in the long run, will still have a very bright future, and we believe that our support of the Building Lighting manufacture and the business lighting designer can play a pivotal role in sustaining and moving prosperity forward even in the darkest of times.

That being said, we would like to discuss today the exact role we play in the business lighting world. To start with, we work in two directions to support the American lighting industry on an exclusive basis. As a distributor and vendor, we work only with manufacturers who are American owned and located within the United States. We hold to this policy both out of loyalty to our own country and domestic business partners and out of a sure belief that American made Building Lighting fixtures is still the very best in the world. Working in close partnership with American manufacturers affords us more ready access to thousands of fixtures, mounts, lamps, and accessories that can equip any lighting designer in the country with the exact model, size, and type light needed to fulfill the needs of a municipal, government, military, academic, or commercial client. It also allows us to expedite timely drop shipping of Building Lighting fixtures anywhere in the nation on the turn of dime, eliminating the problematic of foreign invoicing and time delays involved in overseas shipping and warehousing.

When it comes to the relationships we hold with our contractors in the world of Building Lighting, our position stands unique among our competitors. We are the only virtual lighting design agency that is able to work so closely with commercial lighting design firms in order to help them develop customized commercial lighting systems and expedite proposals that are both cost sensitive and technologically superior to those of their competitors.
