Barn Gooseneck Lighting

By definition, the term gooseneck barn lighting has traditionally referred to the lighting of agricultural barns with gooseneck fixtures.  In the past few decades the term has been

expanded to include other storage structures used in a number of vertical markets.  In some circles, the term can even be used as a synonym for building lighting.

The fixtures used to light these various structures range from a basic gooseneck lamp design to a radial lamp design that hangs down from the ceilings.  Different light sources are also now available from a number of leading building light manufacturers.

For example, there are several different fixture styles and lamp types that are used in lighting modern horse barns.  Barns like this are found not only on ranches, but in urban areas where there is horse racing, polo, and equestrian competitions.  These buildings need the best exterior lights for perimeter security.  Inside the building, there is also a need for general lighting building wide, as well as individual stall lights for the horses themselves. 

Exterior gooseneck barn lighting fixtures feature the standard, classic goose neck design that these lights get their name from.  Interior lights, however, feature a radial design with a fixture that hangs down from the ceiling.  Stall lighting is typically done with fluorescent tube lighting, although there are fluorescent gooseneck fixtures that are smaller than those that are used to light building exteriors.

If there are work areas inside the barn that require task lighting for workers to do their jobs, then goose necks here can be very practical fixtures because workers can adjust the necks of the fixtures to direct the light toward specific areas.   

The many choices in wattages and lamp types can make it appear difficult for organizations to determine which gooseneck barn lighting fixtures are most effective for their particular building.  There are national code and local codes that place restrictions on certain sizes, wattages, and lamp types. 

The best way to make appropriate selections is to let a commercial lighting designer render a photometric design showing how various types of lamps and wattages will perform in a given area of the country, and in a particular type of building.

Photometric designs like this are very important when we consider the many types of buildings these lights are used to illuminate.  There are a number of industrial buildings, warehouses in particular, that have gooseneck barn lights on their building exteriors.   Commercial signage is also lit with goose neck lamps.  Monument style signs, signs on posts, and signs on the sides of buildings can all be brilliantly illuminated with fixtures of different sizes and lamp types.

This is proven to be a very effective and popular way to light restaurant signage, as well as highlight the façade of the restaurant itself. 

Gooseneck barn lighting has also gained new popularity in retrofit applications in historical downtown areas.  With many cities investing in restoration of their original town square, decorative goose lights offer a superb compliment to period architectural styles of the 19^th and 20^th centuries.
